FYI...

I just spoke to my Mazda dealer - they have put together a winter tire package consisting of:

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 1 (185/65/14)

cost: $699(Cdn) + tax (incl. steel rims & balancing)

Question: Does anyone have any experience with studded winter tires? How are they perform on dry pavement?(since most roads are cleared within a few days)
What are other Mazda dealers in North America offering in terms of brands & sizes?

That is good to know!!!!!!! I am in the US, and i don't know if i want to spend that kind of money just to have wheels and tires for 3 months of a year!!!!!!!!!!!! I would love to just get a little cheap set of 15's, with some grip for the snow........I am in NJ, so the snowfall amounts aren't extrodinary, but we do get it when Jan, Feb, and March roll around......... The only thing i worry about is the SALT thrown down after it snows..........I heard that it destroys wheels very easily!!!!!!!!

Help me out?????????

I could not stress it enough... TAKE THE RACING HARTS OFF FOR THE WINTER!!!!

Some cities use salt, some sand. Salt will EAT the finish right off the rims. Sand will chip them like crazy.

As for Studs, some cities in Canada won't let you drive with them on....TO for example. Personally, around here, you can't live without them. Studs are great, but we got some pretty severe weather out here in the winter. So, we don't drive on pavement for about 3 months. And studs are far better around here then blizzaks will ever be. I get new studs every year, except this year....spent all my money on the MP3 : )

As for driving with studs on pavement...they suck. Their loud, and if you hit sand with studs on, it's like hitting ice. The car just sliiidddes. Not as bad as ice, but traction is reduced on pavement with studs. If you find yourself driving on a lot of ice, black ice etc, get studs. Heck of a lot cheaper then blizzaks.

www.discounttiredirect.com/ has packages for winter tires and rims starting at 428 an i heard shipping is free untill oct 31. im definitly getting some for my mp3. im not sure if i should spend the extra $$ for rims or just use the black steel ones.
