How do you pick winter tires?

I had Michelin Xice on a small sedan many years back. Great tires, and they were quiet, but I remember them wearing fairly quickly.

My experience with Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2s is that they are a great, durable winter tire with good performance in snow. After 6 winters, they had between 5/32 and 7/32 tread left. However, they can be a little loud. I would have been comfortable running them for one more winter, but their performance definitely took a hit in the last couple of years of use.
My 225/65/17 X-ice Snow have a 106T XL rating, while DM-V2 have a 102S rating and Conti VikingContact 8 have a 106H XL rating. Seems to me the Conti is made for German Autobahn!
