Why not a Miata?

Ok I have a Protege5 and I keep thinking about trading it for a Miata. I don't really know why. It's just a totally sexy car. It's weird, because I got my Protege5 because it was sexy and functional, but the Miata is most definitely not functional. I test drove a 2002 Miata that the dealership wanted 16,900 for (with 45k miles, yes they were on crack) and I fell in love even though it felt really loose compared to my P5.

I want people to convince me to not get a Miata.. in the Miata section of the forums :)

I only use the functional aspect of my Protege5 like 3-4 times a year. When I need to move my stuff to and from college I can't fit it all in the P5 so I have to have my parents come up with my old Mazda truck to haul stuff.

The only thing is if I got a Miata I would have to have a quick way to attach my mountain bike to it, although even then I could always just borrow the truck (I gave it to my dad) for the day if I needed to and was home for the summer.

Once I hauled a twin mattress in the P5 but it was just as a favor and I didn't need to. I basically never need the utility of the P5, It's just nice and convenient sometimes.

Oh and with the whole 2 seat thing. My car might as well be a two seater, I have a rear seat passenger maybe once a month or so and even then it's never necessary.

Should I wait until I have the money to have my P5 and a 2002-ish (6spd) Miata at the same time or should I just give in an trade the P5 away?

Why not try the best of both worlds? I have both..My P5 and the wife's Miata.
You can pick up a good used Miata for any where from $2000-$9500 (1990-1995 models)(ref: Hemming's buyer's guide).

That would be nice, but I would need to have a job to do that. I'm not really too busy with school to have a part time job, I think I could handle it. I just don't have the courage to go looking for jobs outside of careerbuilder.com :)

If you want someone to convince you not to buy one, this definately isn't the section ;).

However, I'll try. Personally, I couldn't have a Miata as a DD as I do tend to haul things with the Protege. I couldn't be without the utility factor of the wagon. However, I have crammed a full set of wheels with tires as well as a toolbox, jack, 4 traffic cones, helmet, and a few other miscellanous bits into the Miater with room to spare.

i traded my msp for a miata. it is my one and only daily driver now, and i put miles on m car. i love it. hell i think there has on ly been 5 or 6 days in the last 2 months that i havent put the top down at least once. it also gets better gas miliage.

What he said.

I bought my Miata with cash and it's been great. I switch off between driving the P5 and driving the Miata. They both get about the same gas mileage anyway.

do not buy a Miada. thay are horrible cars. After many thousands of miles of cross country travels, many miles on the track, and autocrossing the POS, i was finally sick of it. I was tired of having the sun on my face. I was tired of the wind in my hair. I was tired with the responsive steering and handling. I was tired of the great gas mileage of a small sports car. So sick of it in fact, i bought another one. :)

nice way to persuade someone not to buy one, i love it. Dont feel like ur the only one that hasnt thought about getting a miata, there is a really nice 03 or 02 near me at the dealer. Its white with a black top and it has the oem kit on it, its really really sexy.

ok ill give it my best shot......umm........errr aww forget it i cant do it i love my little lucy(91 1.8 turbo miata), i have driven my friends p5 but i dont know i like the fact that im low to the ground and when i race it everyone tells me its a "girls car" and then get spanked on the track. and not to mention the really nice burnouts and every once in a while getting a little sideways with a good torsen diff.

-Sell your P5.

-Get a modded 94-95 (pre OBDII but still the 1.8)
-Or, buy one stock. Get it with about 75k miles (plenty out there like this) then sink 8k into it with turbo, suspension/tire upgrades, and some mild cosmetics to personalize it.

Assuming your P5 ispaid off you can probably sell it and do all of the above without dipping into your checking/savings account.

By the way I moved back and forth from college to home 4 summers in a row with my Miata, it aint fun but doable... heck even taking my hockey equipment to the arena was possible. Duffle sat shotgun while the stick stuck out the rolled down window (thumb)

i was kidding.

i transported a few miatas. as small as they are, they felt heavy, not sure if that makes any sense

edit: err...i just realized you're the one who needs convincing not to buy it. so yeah, it's a chicks car dude. guys will point and laugh as you work your way in and out of the tiny car. it's a piece of s***. i outran one the other day in a race, but he ended up winning. mainly because the 21st gear on my mountain bike locked up. people are gonna think because you have a small car, you are compensating for a really big.........zit. anyone who gets in the back seat of a miata will hate you for life. any current or future kids will be ashamed of getting in the car with you. you will constantly get pulled over, and cops will ask you "hey do your parents know you're out driving on dangerous streets with your electric toy car, which by the way seems a lot slower than usual toy cars?" if you get a miata, you will finally have something in common with most highschool cheerleaders. might as well start collecting all assortments of chapstick, and read up on menstrual cycles, to complete the whole package. ill come up with more later

Not at all...my Miata is one of the 'lightest' feeling cars I've ever driven IMO

Maybe so, but it's also a true driver's car. It just happens to be sex on wheels and have a smiling face so chicks love them.
Yes chicks love them...but they'll think your gay if they see you in one

...unless it is done up properly...

Is it just me or is the majority of miata owners balding white men?Thats what i see usually driving miatas.

Id still take a Mazdaspeed miata tho. I don't like the brand new ones tho.

I'm with you Zverg. Out of all the cars in existence out there, the only thing i'd consider trading the P5 for is a Miata (although i'm considering the NC). The way i look at practicality is this...if you have a vehicle/suv with more storage space, people feel inclined to adjust their lifestyle to that vehicle and attempt to utilize that space. With a drivers car like the Miata, you will feel more inclined to actually drive and not worry about all the unnecessary junk you need to carry around.
