The Nrburgring isn't just for the big boys. According to a recent report by the UK's Autocar, Ford plans to attack the Green Hell with its new Focus RS. The aim is to set a new front-drive benchmark, a record currently held by the race-ready Renault Megane R26.R.
With 305-hp, 325 lb-ft of torque, and torquesteer-eliminating RevoKnuckle suspension, the RS will bring a well-stocked tool belt to accomplish its task. As European Editor Paul Horrell wrote of his experience behind the wheel, "Your confidence comes from the simply amazing handling. Even with such a pointy turn-in, all four tires share the workload mid-bend. At full lateral g, if the ESP's off, you can back off and get a beautifully progressive and catchable loosening of the tail."
Of the attempt, a Ford spokesperson said, "It's no secret that we will be looking to achieve a time at the 'Ring, but there's no set schedule for it. We didn't get any opportunities before Christmas because the car's production set-up wasn't confirmed and the weather was against us. But we can work on it now."
Autocar reasons Ford will attempt at the next industry event, scheduled for March 31.
