Who Is Running Gtx Gears? Results? Ideas? Hp?

Ok, I do NOT own a MSP *YET*, but, I will be buying one because most of the knowledge I got from building my Probe GT is applicable in many ways. :) Stick with what you know right?

OK, well, I shredded the trans in my PGT a while back, and have seen many others shred them.

Well, what I want to know is, who has actually used the GTX gears? I am about to buy a set, but, I want to KNOW someone who can say they have used them after shredding a set of stock 3rds and can honestly say they have had NO such problems after swapping to the GTX gears..

One thing I KNOW makes the gtx gears stronger is that they have a different ratio which allows a slightly wider gear tooth root which adds quite a bit of strength. I looked into it and it turns out that for every x percentage of width and root you get a fairly substantial gain in power handling in the gear.

Right now, PGT third is 1.31, gtx is 1.21, pgt fourth is 1.7, gtx is 1.2. pgt fifth is .795, gtx is .8... This will allow for bigger gear teeth roots...

But, i want to KNOW, who is using them and what is your experiences?

OK, so I am to assume that all the talk about the gtx gears being better is bs?

I can see *some* increase in power handling due to the slight change in gearing but beyond that, i want real cases...

i dont think many ppl know about them i think ull have to find someone with more info

uh, I am new here. :) Don't know about your videos or any of that, but if you got some good let me see! :)

Also too, specifically, I am looking for a case of someone destroying 3rd, then, replacing the gears with gtx gears, and then doing the same thing and having the gears hold up. If you are one of those ppl, then thats what i want! (wiggle)

OH ya I saw those videos recently on PT.. Hrm, we all wondered exactly how you got your trans to hold up!!!

Well, this solves it thx alot!

Well, they mostly change 3rd and 4th gear and even 5th gear.
Usually with around 450whp, in stock transmission, you would end the 1/4 in 5th gear, but it wont last much, after 500whp, 3rd gear and up will blow in any moment. They even blow on the dyno.

Ya, we get the same problem on the PGTs.. Actually, on the PGTs, sometimes only slightly modded (160whp) motors make gearboxes fail after a hard launch, othertimes they are ok until around 350whp and then they dump but our car is a few hundred lbs heavier than the protege.

This seems to solve the problem.. My next possible swap was the gears out of a Mazda Tribute/Ford Escape thinking that because its a truck the gearboxes should be stronger.

how much money would i be looking for transmission rebuild if i'm going to be between 400-500 hp? This won't be a drag car, just a street car, but it's still going to be dynoed, and i will probably take it to the track once or twice just so that i can say i did it. What should i get?

with gtx gears...around $450-$500

that's not bad at all, what about labor? and would that be all that is needed to make the transmission more powerful?

one last Q from the noob - this is the BF chassis GTX right, not the BG?

I really dont know about those old chasis, im practically new to mazda, but I think is the one on the right on your signature. Its a 323 that came turbo AWD. Its a small transmission.

450-500 is with labor included, you pay shipping. I can do this for you, but you will need to send a core. If you can open the case, just send the internals.

Remember this is a workaround of breaking gears for anything over 350whp, its not that its going to be bullet proof. If you are pushing over 450whp and its usual to powershift using slicks, theres a chance you may blow a gear.

See, most drag cars use BIG turbos; so, turbolag becomes an issue when shifting and launching...right? This means you will have to shift fast (powershift) and in an event that you missshift, you can break a gear. Well, theres another workaround: Nitrous. A small shot (50hp) of nitrous may save your transmission from breaking sooner. The nitrous shot will spoolup the turbo faster so powershifting is not needed. Gears will engange nice and smooth, less stress, less breaking.

can you do a write up about the gear set? is there anything u need or do the just drop in (ie. different clutch, different input shaft) anything
