I now have two 2004 Mazda 6s's now in my family with the same noise.
My sister has had hers for over three years and it's always made the noise. The starter sounds fine, but just after the motor catches there is a loud whine from the engine bay that lasts for a couple seconds. I always assumed it was a belt slipping or a bad pulley bearing, but my parents bought a 2004 that just had its belts replaced and it makes the same noise.
I was told it could be the starter, but the car starts just fine. I suppose it could be the starter spinning up from the motor after you let off the ignition, but I haven't been able to find a thread on here that verifies it. I don't want to replace a starter for no reason.
Also, is there anyway to prevent the starter from making this noise in the future? Lubrication? Dust shield?
Thanks.
