i was thinking of getting a K&N high performance air filter, and/or a AEM SRI. i was wondering which one is worth my money more. i dont have alot of cash, and i wanna make sure i spend it right. i wanna kno which one is will give me the best change for my 1999 protege LX 1.6L 4Cyl Auto. thanks

I just swapped out my K&N for a CAI. However i also have a Mazdaspeed Protege.

Ill be selling the K&N for the right price. PM me if interested.

In response to my previous post, i have now had the CAI for a week and love it.

However, i have found that the CAI provides better horsepower but lower fuel economy. Unfortunately i have to worry about fuel economy because its a daily driver with 68-72 miles per day.

I was getting 29mpg. Now im running around 26.

However, my throttle response is much more noticeable.

Not sure if i got a 13 hp gain, but i can definately feel some gain when i push the pedal

i tried putting in a do it yourself cold air intake (yea i know.. ghettooo, but all i can afford) but now when i put it on, for some reason, the MAF sensor wouldnt let the car stay running. Ive heard of problems witht he MAF sensor, but was never really concerned about it till now that im trying to put one in myself. this sucks cause i jsut spent 100 bucks and it doesnt work, and i really want it to work. thanks.

Vacuum hoses

Try checking if all the vacuum are secure and tight and that you don't have any leaks. This is usually the problem.

Is your filter dryflow or does it require oil? I know that on this car the MAF will get messed up from oil entering the intake pipe and cause the car to run like crap. If you are using an oil soaked filter, be extra careful to not over- oil it for this reason.

The AEM short ram intake is pretty much a cold air intake, its awesome cause it takes the air from the bottome of the engine bay... try it out, i love this intake

Ok, so do every one have the same experience after adding a CAI or Short ram you see a decrease mpg?

No thats your right foot becoming addicted to hearing the sound of the intake.

With my mods I see 31 MPG highway and 26 city.

I got a year 2000 pro SE 1.6 I wanna put cold air intake but I am worried about the MAF sensor giving issues also the pipe i have is for a 98 pro 1.6 will it work?

exactly, so many of my friends that just start getting into cars always get all freaked out like they are gonna get the gas mileage of a 1 ton dually ford truck with a V10 in it if they put a ram air on thier car cause of what "they say" (crazy)(they being the general public i guess, i.e. misconceptions they got from people that dont know what they're talking about and make sh#$ up and start believing it)

i'm right behind popo w/ gas mileage in my p5 and i have K&N RAM air + OBX header + full catback sport exhaust
