Any reduction in leverage will cause harder shifting...increasing length below the fulcrum and decreasing length above it reduce leverage, thus make the shift lever a little harder to engage...you get use to it quickly though...
The bushings come into play by reducing flex and slop during shifting...They make gear engagement feel more positive with more feedback...I didn't notice them making shifting feel any more or any less difficult, but you definately know when the shifter "snicks" into place...Also the notchiness associated with ss shifters tends to become less apparent after a few hundred miles...
