what subwoofer should i buy for my MSP?

oh yeah i turned right back to the store and they replaced it no problem. they said it was the amp that caused the sub to die so quickly. so now i'm gonna go tell mazda to replace it... i'm not connecting the new sub to the amp until mazda has a look at the amp first.

If they can't prove its the amp, then hook that b**** up, worst case is the sub blows again and they have to replace it for free again.

I take it you threw out the stock sub?

ok finally my part came in and is installed. funny thing is, i was expecting a replacement subwoofer, but they had ordered the ENTIRE rear deck. now to go back to myer emco this evening to get the JL sub back in.

Normal, Mazda has no part number for the sub nor the amp.. to them, it's one big part...

thinkin about doin the sub replacement since I'm a trance and rap fan and the stock sub just isn't delivering like I want

would this sub work as far as letting me use the stock enclosure and amp? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...02922&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03081 I know the amp has to be flipped, but other than that is there anything else I'm missing?

If you listen to Trance and rap, most 8" subs in that enclosure won't give you what you're looking for. Get a JL 10w0 in a prebuilt enclosure or an eD 10Kx.14 and build the vented enclosure that they recommend. Neither will provide really low low bass, but they'll mix nicely with the stock MSP system, and you can continue to use the amp...but that enclosure back there is one big POS.

Also...don't bother with that RF because it's a dual 4ohm. The stock amp can run 4ohm, but I would suggest flipping it over first. FYI, you can use te stock amp on the two set-ups that I mentioned above.

yeah, I was trying to use the stock enclosure, I know it sucks but its unobtrusive and..there. I'll just look for a 4ohm 8" sub

If out of the ones I listed I think the JL will match what you need. I got a 8in sub I would go with a resonant engineering, ED, or a JL 8W3v2 (you can get the d2 with the VC's in series for 4ohms). I think it was 125Wrms that the JL called for. I would reccommend the ED 8A if you had the power (say 200Wrms and I dont think the stock amp can do that specially at 8ohms).

4ohm operation, right power range (stock amp @ 4ohms 150Wrms?) and it will fit in the 8in hole of your stock box.

correction: I would pick the JL because it has 4ohm operation, right power range (stock amp @ 4ohms 150Wrms?) and it will fit in the 8in hole of your stock box.

w0's are wimpy, will give you nice rich bass for radio voices but not tight bumps in your music. go with 1st in NH's suggestion: w3d2

Will the JL 8w3v2d2 sound good for Punk, Rock and a little Reggae??Like not too much bumb for the punk, but enough for the reggae??? Like, what I'm saying is, I'll still be able to hear the music over the bass, right??? Also, will I have to flip the amp for sure if I run a series at 4ohm?? Or will it be ok normal. I'm guessing flip, right?? Also, what size screw/thread size would I be looking for? And, is the JL really that much better than the stock system?? Cause if it is, I'll for sure fix this right away.;

oh, and will continuous bass sound good, not distortion like the stokc is. Like in Jammin(Marley if you even have to ask). I'm just wondering cause on the way home today, I was listening to this, it it sounded just wrong, will it be a good range of bass, and bump really nice as well as the continuos bass bits??? Thanx again.

Edit*Is this the one you guys are talking about, or no??http://www.jlaudio.com/subwoofers/8w3v2.html

The 8w3v2 is a great match for the amp, but the amp MUST be flipped...even if it's just for safety's sake. Flip it and leave about 3/4"-1.25" inches of clearance above it so the hot air has somewhere to move.

As for screw/thread...you're gonna have to figure that out...you've got the stock ones, just bring them to home depot and figure out the size! :p

That sub will sound good with punk and rock, and if you set your gains properly, you can turn the NF level up for reggae. Jammin is a great song BTW...as for continuous bass...if you notice continuous bass, then the sub is poor. You should be able to just have the system blend everything together so that you won't notice the sub isn't there, unless you hit the NF output control and turn it off.

Anywho...these 8" subs aren't for bumping along to rap tunes in general...but they'll do well right down to 50hz. Using WinISD, in a .25CF box, you'll get ~100dB at 50hz, and it's linear down to 20hz. It's 95dB at 40, and 90dB at 50...that's decent response there, and those are very conservative numbers.

Of course...a 10w0 in a sealed .5CF box with 125W would provide better resonse, but there's only so much you can coax out of an 8" sub. If you're generally satisfied with the MSP system, but just want some ectra bass to fill it out, the 8w3v2 would be a great choice, in my opinion.
