What have you done to your P5 today?

^^^They also come in a 5x114.3 just have the 4 lug pictured.

Not a damn thing lately other than commuting to/from work but she's running. :)

And think I've finally decided on a set of tires for summer. Leaning towards the Hankook Ventus V2 Concept H437s
Hankook-VentusV2H437_lg.jpg

I just put a set of those on my car. They are amazing.

well today she sat...tues she goes to a new home after 12yrs of ownership...her new home, my son's house. he needs some wheels for the rest of the winter. unfortunately my beloved p5 turned into a winter beata 3 yrs ago when i picked up the 04 msm. she's done yeoman's work over the yrs and at 163k she is still running well (boosted for the last 8 yrs), but the rust on the door seams, shock tower, rear lid and hood is starting to take it's toll. in her place i picked up a 07 sport trac for my daily commuter for the next 2 & 1/2 months. it will be a sad day to see her go for sure...

Good to know and tks. Close to pulling the trigger...will get the camber bolts installed and an alignment done with the snow tires on while getting the summer tires m&b.

Sad day indeed! :'( at least you know shes going to a good home. Grats again on the sport trac.

Well I tried looking at the maf- one bolt came undone that attaches to the tube, the other was on its way out. Luckily I got them both reattached. I started it up one more time and turned everything on to try and replicate the low idle phenomenon to no avail. I turned the heater on and both fans fired up on cue. There was a hideous rattle in the catalytic converter- im thinking thats a screw or something? Maybe there's a part of the cat that came off or something? Idk. At 900 rpm or so it rattles like crazy. When the idle drops once it warms up all the way, it goes away till I hit 900 when im accelerating. Could that be something important? Only thing is, it took 90 miles before the cel flashed at me...

EDIT: Also, when my pal turned the car off, I noticed almost like a purge sound for a quick second. Im thinking that could be a vacuum leak or a bad seal of some sort perhaps?? If thats the case, im guessing if I got the code read, the thing would read vacuum low?? I need to get the code reader soon (see below) how could I test for a leak? Only reason I don't think it's coolant is that my overflow is still at the same level. My oil smelled a small bit like gas though, perhaps due to the piston rings. But thats sorta common, no?

Ill have to talk to my dad about buying the obd2 scanner. $54 isn't a bad price and when it comes to being able to diagnose things on my own time, it helps my case :) I'll probably pick it up but ill wait till my next paycheck.

Finally had a chance to bake open the CDM headlights I got from BrianMP5T ... and then I discovered that the tabs holding the bezels to the lenses are totally broken off on one headlight, and almost broken on the other... guess I'm making a trip to get some mighty putty in the morning lol. No fault of his though, the headlights were definitely never opened before. I guess the MP5T had too much powa for them LOL

2 things:

1) Check the heat shield around your cat. Mine was rattling at all sorts of random points - idle, low RMP acceleration, and around 2,500 RPM. I eventually got under there with some pliers and ripped it off. The seams were completely rusted out, except for one corner. Here's a pic:

2) If you have a smartphone, you can pick up a decent bluetooth OBD2 scanner online and purchase the Torque app. Personally, I love it. The Torque app is a scanner AND a digital dashboard. Plus, you can look up the codes right on your phone and you don't have to flip through and books. Just my opinion.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Got a new valve cover gasket than put some new paint on valve cover. The old gasket was in pieces..

I had the same problem when I replaced mine a few months back. Bits and pieces everywhere from the old one. Not to mention WAY too much sealant. I installed a FelPro gasket that requires no sealant... not even in the corners by the cams. Not a drop leaked since.

1; I never knew there was a heat shield there -_- I'll have a poke around today.

2; sadly I have a windows phone so no Torque app from what I can tell. The app sounds really neat though. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to be different and buy something nobody has. Lol. Ill pick the scanner up soon, as I may have said. I want to try and do it within the next month.

EDIT would that be okay with one of you guys to take a pic of the underside of your car to show how low the exhaust hangs? When I go over some larger, more sweeping bumps, something scrapes along the road, from what I can feel. A pic from the rear would be best but it's entirely at your guys' discretion.

I guess I know what I'm doing once I have the funds:

Motor mounts- I'll get all 4 but do the sides and front for now (this'll end up happening in the summer most likely)
OBDII scanner- that's a no-brainer in my case. (I'll need to pick it up w/in the next few weeks)

My mom's all like "I just don't get why you spend that much money." It's my pride and joy. If I had 8k to throw away on a prepaid lease or something easy like that, maybe I might have done that. But 1) I don't and 2) I've loved how the P5 looks since I almost got one at the end of junior year of high school... Besides, I think I can justify the rebuild and doing all this work. Yeah, we don't have emissions or anything to worry about RE CELs and such, but I'd rather not have to look at that thing for my whole time owning her.

EDIT 2:

Pardon my multiple edits but I got a video of when the motor almost dies:

I gave it a small bit o gas and then turned the heater on- maybe its the compressor firing up and that kinda kills the engine slightly? That wouldn't explain the flashing CEL though, would it? I told my pal and he suggested it could be a coil going bad perhaps? I tried holding it at around 1.5k and the "idle" fluctuated a small amount, 50 rpms at most either way. Besides that, I don't know if I'm any farther than when I began my journey...

That was what was left of my heat shield. And it stopped the rattle :D I guess the other half is hiding somewhere in MI or something.

i had the same thing happen with the heat shield. i could see it hanging there. one day, heard a louder thunk and it was quiet. lost it on the freeway somewhere!

it's not what I did to my P5 today, it's what I didn't do

it was almost buried under snow, at least the back half, and I didn't even bother digging it out as it would be completely useless given the conditions of the roads. Hooray for having a 4x4 truck! (2thumbs)

to give you an idea as to how bad everything else was...

I heard you guys were supposed to get a bunch of snow, but not THAT much. I guess, as long as she's snug, its all good. Not to play the devil's advocate but wouldn't the snow melting lead to some water getting into the car? Or am I thinking too deeply into the whole melting water thing?

Times like that make me thankful for having a garage to park mine in- though we dont get superstorms on quite as massive scales AFAIK

Well I'm clearing it off tomorrow, i just didn't have time today. I spent about 7 hours today clearing snow all over the neighborhood but never got to mine... But I made good money (2thumbs) no snow will melt by tomorrow, it will stay below freezing until Monday here

Bastian: Besides the whole closing down the town and stuff, people not making money, etc. I WISH I had that much snow to play in out here. I think it was 3 years ago we got about 14" of snow overnight... all lake effect. I was a blast taking my old '95 Protege out for a spin... not to mention the fact that she drove right out of it from a dig. Call me insane, but I love snow... a lot.

KingOfSpades: I feel so bad for the underside of your car if the bottom half of that heat shield came off while you or someone else was driving. When you get some spare time, take a look underneath there and make sure everything is in good shape.

I can imagine you did! Save the best for last I suppose ;) I shouldn't think there's gonna be school for you guys on Monday? Or is your superintendent crazy like mine? The one we had last year was from Alaska if that hints at anything. And we have to walk between schools (I feel as though I said that a while back). But yeah, I should have thought about that.

And they say global warming doesn't exist ;)

people not making money.

I actually made more money today clearing driveways than I would've at my job. I know you're talking about business, but I made out well (2thumbs)

As for school on Monday, it really depends on when they clear out the roads. I took the truck out tonight, and I was fine on the major roads in town with 4x4, but the P5 wouldn't have gotten through it. I'll probably be using the Jeep to deliver tomorrow night, unless by some miracle of god they manage to clear the roads out by then. My town is strange in that it is sprawling. It's divided in to six distinct boroughs divided by a ton woods, and each of these neighborhoods has a s*** ton of tiny one car-width side streets. You can drive at 40 mph for 30 minutes and still be in town if you go from Magnolia to Lanesville. None of the residential streets end up getting plowed.

@jdmdude I had a look today and everything checked out. I hate to think of how loud it sounded. And what the car behind experienced. Im more scared of the rust than the heat shield, no offence. Im sure it could have done a good amount of damage if it landed in a certain way.

As far as drifting, I know how enjoyable that can be. I took my dads Altima out yesterday and even with a foot brake, i got it quite sideways on two occasions. Ill be a great deal more gentle to my dearest Winry, thats for sure. Even my moms Jeep i BA y most of the time. I still give it a bit of a bolloking once in a while. But i kinda give my dads lease a thrashing- i need to be more gentle though, i feel a little disrespectful.

@bastian that sounds like a winter wonderland to me. We have a road, Hines Drive, that winds around for miles but canton is pretty boring other than that. Ive had this urge to drive around aimlessly for a while now, just to pass the free time. Northville is a little better as far as random roads, but its hilly and i dread rolling back into someone when i do end up driving my car.

We used to not have a snowplow on my part of the street and that wasn't any fun but our neighbors chipped in and got us a guy. He's actually had to work for his cash this year.

yeah im still snowed in down in southern CT. our neighborhood still isnt plowed, neither is a lot of the town. i rode my bike around yesterday to see what it all looked like and many of the roads were plowed just by larger trucks driving over the snow. all one lane. pretty sweet!

just hope that if i cant make it to work tomorrow that i dont have to use a paid day off for it

Just fyi, I recently talked my friend out of overspending on a scanner. If you just need to read and clear codes this one is $20 https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned)
