What have you done to your Mazda6 today?

Chris, I found the cheapest price on the Densos at Amazon. They might help a bit with the KR, but I still have the issue after installing the upgraded plugs.

Speaking of knocking...took the car to the dealership today to have them try to replicate the knock. They had me drive it around, and of course I couldn't get it to knock while the tech was in the car with me...and then it knocked to 7.4 on the way home. Grrr..... They did call Mazda, who said the knocking is normal, so I think it's going to take having a tech in the car when the knock goes off hard enough to hear and make the car shake to convince them it's not a simple problem. I also have a weird transmission ping, but they couldn't replicate it either (well, the tech did make the car do that right in front of me but he thought he was just almost stalling it). I have a feeling they just decided I was the crazy guy hearing noises.

As I've said before, some knock is inevitable. The more I read into it, the more it looks like it's just the nature of the engine. The Densos definitely help, but they won't totally eliminate it.

so, it's been 5500 miles since my last oil change... should I go ahead and change the oil again while I change the transmission, PTO, and diff oil? or will those be enough frustration for one day?

I say do it. You should be thinking about an oil change at 5,500 miles anyway; plus, you'll already be under the car with your hands dirty. Might as well.

had a Parrot MKi9100 Bluetooth Handsfree unit in the VRMS6.... Handsfree calling and streams my music wirelessly... First impressions are good so far....

if you put to much oil in you can induce knock since some oil go as blow by. if you are putting in 6qt this is to much, you want to fill about 5.5qt and check it and go from there. yes the owners manual says 5.7qt i believe but this is if you get every last drop of oil out, which never happens, you usually leave some behind.

i'm pretty sure the manual actually says 6qt, but the issue is that there is an area that never drains, and about .5 qt just sits there mixing in with the new stuff.

so, absolutely sound advice. i've always filled a qt less than the manual says, then watch the dipstick from there. for any car.

3000 might be a little early for synthetic, but really if that makes you comfortable, then stick with it. I try to stay around 5000. I know you can't get a proper answer without having a UOA done on your particular car, but since many of ours tend to get fuel in the oil, sooner is better than later.

7500 like the owners manual says. I dont think it even requires synthetic in the manual, so synthetic should be fine.

Synthetic here, and i change every 3000 to 5000 miles depending solely on how i drove.
If i hit a lot of canyons or tracked that month, obviously i like to change the oil sooner.
regular DD driving mostly one month, than i can go longer.

aye, i've researched enough to see this engine WILL knock no matter what, but the degree and consistency with which i knock is the concerning part. I know plugs wont fix the problem, but it is a step towards eliminating possible problems. Other small things like fuel type seem to help; i knocked to HELL using Chevron, switched to Mobil and i record MUCH less KR. hell, 50k+ miles still on fomoco stock plugs doesnt have me comfortable anyway, lol. I think for our cars the only way to get KR to be less frequent or stop all-together is a pro-tune... i hope to eventually get a tuning solution.

aye thx for the heads up for good priced densos reed!

I had oil put in my car that was not synthetic before, I freeked out but the "japanese" mechanic said that my car does not need synthetic. He said I only need it if I did any kind of hard/aggressive driving, tracking or racing. I freeked out, called Mazda and they told me that I actually don't have to put synthetic in. The next oil change after that I decided to put synthetic in anyways, lol.

Wow, what a day... put the car up on jack stands with a bad kobalt floor jack... huge PIA. Then I changed the oil, changed the rear diff oil, and attempted to change the transfer case and transmission oils. However, I only had a 24mm socket, and I needed a 24mm Box end wrench for the transmission. Rode my bike to 2 different hardware stores and the biggest I could find was 22mm. Fail. I didn't change the transfer case oil because I saw that it was leaking so I'm going in to hopefully have the TSB done before my warranty is up Oct 29. Huge disappointment, because I only wanted to change the engine and diff and pto oil because I wanted to change the transmission oil over to ford motorcraft. Oh well, maybe next weekend...

Then I wanted to check my spark plugs. They looked ok. the piston heads were charred black though... Is that normal? I know we run really rich, but would it be worthwhile to seafoam the engine?

Anyways, after putting the intercooler back on, I was putting back on the BPV and whatdya know one of the bolt heads broke off! Had to go buy some vice grips to back it out... tomorrow I'm going to have to find a replacement screw. obnoxious. I'm going to have top stay out of the boost tomorrow.

Now, if I had a Miata this day would have gone a lot smoother because I could have driven to the store. Oh well... at least the engine oil change was the smoothest, cleanest oil change I've ever done! :D

See? I told you that you should do the oil... (thumb)

Maybe because the car was level not all drained out. Oh well. BUT I was able to get the filter drain plug out this time :D Everythings comin up milhouse!

My basement and garage reeks of gear oil now... lovely
