Weird engine noise! Video inside

the ticking sound? sounds like a valve tick. also is it cold in your area? Can you provide any details on changed the engine? was it a rebuilt one or a used one with any mods added? my friend changed his cams for more aggressive ones and when he did that he had the same noise.

I changed the engine for a 2002 with 58 000 km. The engine didn't run for two years. I changed the timing belt, clutch and spark plugs. New oil and filter obviously. Kept the same valves cover, tranny, alternator, starter and power steering pump. Didn't check the compression.

The blown engine had a couple of things on it (cold air, hard pipes, no cats, manual boost controller, BOV, Map relocated) but I removed everything after it blew up.

If you want to hear the engine when it blowed : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpIznHL0yjA

P.S. It is not cold in my area yet. (about 50F in the morning)

it can occur for a number of reasons. it may be what they call "knock" as well. Usually valve tick is caused by the type of oil being used - thinner oil makes them noisy. Our cars can use 5w-30 synthetic without issue. The valve springs could be worn. The valve lash (distance of opening) and may need adjusting. Knock usually occurs with the type of gas being used. What spark plugs are you using?

Assuming that their are no timing issues - those are usually associated with misfire. and assuming that the replacement engine was cared for and assembled correctly. If orginial the stock cams and valve stuff were put in the used engine then I would check the adjustments - timing belt alignment, cam gear alignment, valve spring and valve lash measurements. If your not sure, then i'd check to see if the cams were upgraded cause that usually sounds identical when the cams are replaced for more agressive ones.

2002 stock and boosted 2.0L doesn't have a ticking sound by default.

I use NGK spark plugs, I think it is the bkr7.... They are the ones recommended for the speed. I didn't touch the gap (0.042'' I think)

To me that sounds like an exhaust leak at the manifold or somewhere. The motor sounds normal when idling...it's when you step on it, you get that broken flute sound.

Did you blow it on purpose? What the hell....It does sound a lot like an exhaust leak so check that and also try to target if the clicking is coming from the engine directly.

Damn, that vid of the engine blowing was crazy. Could see the dude holding the cam jump back, hell, I did too. I would have expected more anger/yelling/expletives if it he didn't expect it to happen. Sorry for the threadjack, but what the hell caused that engine to blow like that?

LONNGG JOHHNNSSONNN.... OH DON PIAANNNOOo

Sounds like the compressor wheel in your turbo is rubbing against the housing. Pull the intake pipe off and have a look you should see scrub mark on the aluminum housing where the wheel makes contact.
