Can anyone please point me in the direction of a decent free webhosting service. I'm not looking for anything fany. Just something I can put together a decent template with to put some stuff online and something thats pretty stable. I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Free = full of ads on your pages, slow loading, frequent downtime.

I use Lunarpages for my sites. http://www.lunarpages.com

$7 / month, and you get the domain name registration for free.

Haven't had a single major issue with them. The few times I've had problems, their customer service has been wonderful.

I agree with the free sites. Lots of ads and no bandwidth.

I did some research and switched over to IXWebhosting.com. I have 15 sites that I designed and/or am responsible for and they have been great. Their pricing starts at 4.95/month.

www.aplus.net - Starts at $5.95... WELL worth it. These guys are great. I have about $25/mo worth of packages with them.

Very easy to work with, they fix any problems (very rare) instantly, and you can get a live person on the phone or chat 24/7.

Do Not use www.dot5hosting.com! For the most part their servers have been online over the past couple years I have had hosting with them. Just this past weekend my website was down for 2 days and is still having issues when loading as it is very slow. So in an attempt to contact their tech support to simply answer one question, I got the runaround after waiting 20 minutes.

You are now chatting with 'Bryan Smith'
Bryan Smith: Hi Josh, I apologize for the wait time. My name is Bryan Smith, how are you today?

josh: You had an outing this weekend I noticed.

Bryan Smith: How can I help you today?

Bryan Smith: I only have your first name. Can I have your complete name for our records?

Bryan Smith: While reviewing your account, I noticed that you have not set up the Security Question. I suggest that to set up the Security Question for your account. We will be enhancing our Security protocols and will be requiring all customers to have their Security Question set for identification purposes. Hence, please set the Security Question by following the steps given below:
Bryan Smith: 1. Log into the Control Panel with your account username and password.
Bryan Smith: 2. Click on the link 'Set Security Question' under Account Information section.
Bryan Smith: 3. Click the 'New Profile' radio button.
Bryan Smith: 4. Enter First Name, Last Name, and set the security question and Answer.
Bryan Smith: 5. Finally click on 'Save' button.

josh: Joshua Hanley

Bryan Smith: Else, can you please provide me the last four digits of credit card which we have on file?

Bryan Smith: Thank you!

josh: Your servers seem to be running very slow today. Is this because of the outing?

Bryan Smith: Please set the Security Question for your account by following the above steps first.

josh: My account is up for renewal. I wish to continue hosting with you, only if this is something planned to be resolved.

josh: I'm trying to log into the account now

Bryan Smith: Okay. Please set the Security Question for your account by following the above steps first.

josh: It's very slow

Bryan Smith: Great!

josh: Did you have a server go down?

Bryan Smith: I have sent the account login information of your account to Administrative e-mail address myemail@comcast.net. Please access the e-mail to make sure that you have received the account username and password. In order to log into the Control Panel, please go through this link: http://dot5hosting.com/member .

josh: received

Bryan Smith: Please set the Security Question for your account by following the above steps first.

josh: Still having trouble accessing your website

josh: Just hanging

Bryan Smith: Can you please provide me the last four digits of credit card which we have on file?

josh: Not sure which one was used. Account was setup years ago.

josh: I have the original account email.

Bryan Smith: Unless, you set the Security Question for your account and provide me the answer to Security Question or last four digits of credit card which we have on file, I will not able to assist you further regarding your any issue.

josh: I can not access my account. Your website will not load. I have my original confirmation email for account setup.

Bryan Smith: Unless, you set the Security Question for your account and provide me the answer to Security Question or last four digits of credit card which we have on file, I will not able to assist you further regarding your any issue.

josh: So that's it? Ok, I shall transfer my account and domain then. Thank you for your time.

Bryan Smith: Okay.

Bryan Smith: Good Bye.

^^^ wow - customer service at its worst. If you interested, since your a fellow member here, shoot me a PM I can set something up for you (no adds, plenty of bandwidth (: ).

I've had good results from 1and1.com.

$60 a year gets me

120G of webspace
1.2T of transfer
2 domains
120 email accounts
and great stats data for figuring out who visits and what they do
no advertisements

also avoid mysitespace.com

I've been with them for a few years, and they have a penchant for changing server configurations without warning. They also recently "upgraded" the web admin interface to the horrendous WebsiteOS (gimmie back cPanel!)
I was on a shared server, and response times were pretty pathetic. Support was merely ok.

I think I'll be going to lunarpages...
