USB Port: Does it power off?

Hello All...

Is anyone able to confirm if the USB port located in the console powers off when the ignition is off?

I have an iPod plugged into this port and would for it to power down when the ignition is off.

Thanks..!!!

Mine does not turn off. I don't know why/why not. :( I HAD a phone charger plugged into it until I noticed the light wouldn't go off on the charger. Weird. Seems like a constant drain on the battery.

Did you wait five minuets, sometimes there is a residual charge, so the led will remain on for a short time.

Good point. Waited for a few minutes but not too long. Perhaps I'll go plug in my charger & check in a half hour. Update coming...

Been over a half hour. Still on. I even left the key fob inside the house & looked through the window in case opening the door would activate power to it. I'll wait longer and update again. Of course I left the center arm rest up so I could see it through the window. Weird.

From what I've read, this is why the 2013 models are able to resume playback on iPods. The 2014 models apparently do not maintain power to the USB, and therefore the iPod has to be unplugged/replugged to get the head unit to recognize it after the stereo is turned off or switched to another function and then back to iPod.

If you use iPod in the car, consider yourself lucky, assuming that this info is the correct reason for the issue.

Hello All...

The build date on my car is Feb 2013, so if that is a 2013 or 2014 car I really am not sure. (To me, it's 2013.)

I have an older version iPod Nano plugged into the port. Each time I start the car, it re-reads the contents. It does not resume playback. It does not need to unplugged and plugged back in to be recognised. The fact that it does this, supports the notion the USB does turn off.

Mine is a 2013 as well. On february.
The usb switches off when ignition is off. I did the trial with my phone, and when ignition was off it stopped charging
Ipod/iphone/usb sticks are read again each time the ignition is on

Mine from february is a 2013. The radio has not any Chromed button separators and the engine cap is blue. 2014's 2.0L have the engine cap in black matte. 2014's 2.5L have the engine cap in brilliant black. I have no pandora app nor texting features on the touchscreen

Can't speak for USB ports, but on mine, the cigar lighter socket in the cubby under the radio powers off with the ignition, but the socket in the center armrest console is always powered up. You can get inexpensive USB power adapters for the cigar lighter sockets.

I have a 2013 and the USB port definitely turns off when the car is turned off. I have an iPod always connected to that port and it turns off.
Note that this is the USB port. I don't know what the power port does. That may be cause for confusion or different answers here.

Sassimac - you REALLY need to know what model year car you have. It matters when you buy parts or participate on this forum. Please look at the paperwork so you have this most basic information.

Robert, does your iPod resume playback where you left off when you start the car again?

This has me somewhat bemused. The car's build date is late February 2013. The papers I have say 2013 Mazda Cx 5 diesel Grand Touring. It is the Australian model. Personally, I just don't see how a car built at the beginning of 2013 could possibly be classed a 2014 car. (??) Is this a USA thing?

Also, my iPod does NOT resume. It actually has to reload its data each time I start the car.

Cheers and thanks..!!! :)

"In the United States, for regulation purposes, government authorities allow cars of a given model year to be sold starting on January 2 of the previous calendar year. For example, this means that a 2013 model year vehicle can legally go on sale on January 2, 2012."

Yes the 2014 is a US thing, makes no sense to me either, but I just go with the flow.

Yes, the iPod resumes where it left off when I leave the car. I never touch it in the center console. Start the car and it starts playing. Turn off the car and the iPod stops and turns off (loses power and then goes to sleep basically). Turn the car back on and the iPod starts from where it left off. Really a nice feature. I never listen to the radio anymore.

My iPod Nano, always connected to the USB port, has to reload every time I start the car, but after that it resumes the last song. It's definitely powered off when I turn off ignition.
Same thing for the power charger next to USB port.
Mine is a european CX-5 '12 model (supposed to be same as 2013 US model).

Interesting. That is exactly how it is supposed to work, and exactly how my last vehicle (Tacoma) also worked. I'm using the same iPod I did then, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. I wish I could borrow a factory head unit out of someone's 2013 model to see if that works in my 2014 or if it is something in the wiring architecture that has changed. Although, loximoto stated in the above post that their 13 model does not function properly. That is the first time I've read of a 2013 model not working.
