turbo whistling sound

Just recently my protege started making a loud whistling sound...it happens when i give it gas no matter where the rpms are 1st to 5th gear it makes this sound its not quite as loud when in neutral but i can still hear it ...i checked the impeller and there is a slight play but nothing to be worried about i dont think there is no leak that i have noticed yet. All of the piping looks good...This is my first turbo car so i dont know what else to look at...Someone please help

i drove it for about a month and it never made the sound...although it did just start when it started getting cold here but i still dont think that would make it this much louder

i dunno, since the air is more colder, it is more dense. So, that could contribute to the sound you hear since dense= more air=quick spool

The reason i dont think it is the cold is because i drove it about 100 miles in the cold before it actually started making the sound

This started just recently with me, but I don't think it is the cold. I am gonna try and get an audio clip 2night and I will post it up. Mine started after I reworked some of my FMIC pipes to look cleaner. My turbo still spools but at high boost it will start to whistle, haven't noticed anything different drivability wise though!

A buddy of mine that is overseas said it could be the line from the turbo housing to te accuator on the waste gate...he said if its cracked or losing pressure do to the bad hose it could be over boosting... so im going to check that and see if its the problem.

My car had loud whistling too. Turns out it was a mix of my Short Ram Intake + leaking bypass valve. I replaced the BPV and voila, no more whistling. Just intake noise now :).

yeah kinda of like a bottle rocket

Well I can tell you I tried to figure out what that sound was for a long time. Mazda went so far as to replace the exhaust system and turbo, and they never got rid of the sound. Once I started modding the car it went away, but I did 3-4 mods at once.

Try checking your intercooler piping. They have a tendency to crack right where the BPV nipple is on the piping, and could cause a high pitched sound like that.

I think the guy that looked at it said it was starting to crack right at where it connects so that could be the problem

Does it do it only once the car warms up? If so then the piping is most likely the culprit. Once the piping gets some hot compressed air flowing through it the plastic expands allowing the crack to leak.

sorry to thread jack but, mine does the samething as you described harlow, but mine gets quieter as the car warms up. In the morning its really loud. Other than that its just really annoying. Anyone have other ideas what it could be? thanks

if it gets quieter as it warms, I would call it normal... but I would check thoroughally for boost leaks... I neglected to hook up my BPV when I switched to a hard hot pipe.. and the turbo noise was loud as sin..

might be far off but possible its an exhaust mani leak.. cracked manis usually have a weird sound at start up but when they warm up they disapear... possible?

My cracked mani sounded like a sewing machine, and it got worse as the mani got hotter due to the expansion of the metal allowing more air through the crack. Mine actually never made a sound until it got hot.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was?
