Turbo An Auto???

I think I've asked this before but I'm still anxious about it: I REALLY want to turbo my P5. I've got an automatic transmission - what does that mean for my turbo? Will I have to keep the boost low? Do I need to find a stronger, more responsive torque converter? Can I eventually drop that slushbox out and throw in a manual tranny? Someone just tell me that everything will be ok and that I can have massive amounts of horsepower AND a stock automatic transmission...thx guys!

Just go spend some money at www.levelten.com, or find a P5 5spd that is wrecked and be the first to do the swap. I doubt you can have serious hp on the stock automatic, but I could be wrong.

Search for other threads but there is no problem with a turbo as mine shows. Just think of all the torque in first gear with a normally aspirated engine.

beleive it or not, some cars actually run better turbo automatic because of the longer gears so they get more power out of each one. dont flame me, becuase i said some cars, one i know for a fact is the lexus is300, and i have heard that some of the older supras.

Actually all you'll need it the torque converter upgrade, or if your really going for alot of power the valve body re-done, you don't need a whole new tranny. Over at www.probetalk.com in the A-Team section there are some members who have gone with level ten TC's and Valve bodies, you might want to talk with them some.

Not really a matter of better in automatic than in manual (I don't think there was a choice) but the Buick Grand National was a mean turbo :) A decent number of street drag cars are automatics around here, it seems. A whole slew of Thunderbirds, at least :)

The auto tranny on the Protege is the F4NAEL and is the same tranny as the Ford Focus. Only in a different case they share most of the same internals. I am planning on getting a Level Ten torque converter and Red Line fluid with and oil cooler for the tranny to help keep the temps down. Here is the email response I got back from level ten.

Dear Sir ,
We do offer a pts transmission system that will be able t handle up
to 3 times the factory power. It will also get rid of all the lag and
the hesitation off the start and take off anywhere from 1/2-1 second off
1/4 mile times. It will get rid o the factory lazy luxury shifts and
replace them with throttle oriented shifts. It will last longer and run
cooler internally.
Pts system includes pts clutches, pts steels, pts bans, pts
hydrosyetem upgrade ...
pts transmission system will be able to handle up to 3 times the factory
power!!
pts transmission system $3264.
pts torque converter upgrade $498.

Thanks for the inquiry!

So should I send them my tranny pan thingy and my torque converter and just have them do the upgrade or buy a whole new tranny?? Also, what about that Shiftronic thing - that looks badass, especially for those of us P5 owners who bought too early for the Mazda auto-shifter :(

I have heard mixed opinions about shift tronic differentials. I drove one when I went to the dealer and it was the same thing as my tranny except you could shift when you wanted to. The weird thing about it is if you did not down shift it would come back to 1st on its own. I think the shift tronic is a gimmick and dont really care whether I have it or not. The tranny shifted at Identical shift points as mine. As for sending them your tranny. I doubt I will be pay $3200 beans to redo my tranny. I am going to get there torque converter assembly. Which is a direct replacement for the one that is already in the car from what I understand. So the only reason to send them your tranny is if you want to upgrade the clutch packs and all the internals and for $3200 I think I will look around a little before I spend that kind of money.

I am going Turbo once I install the following Oil Cooler, Red Line fluid and new torque converter then go turbo. I hope that helped just my opinion though.

for most of the Mazda stuff I saw on their site, they say it's a rebuild of YOUR parts i.e. you send them your torque converter and they make it better...

Huh, I need to call these guys and get the correct info. I missed what you were talking about the first time I looked ,but now that I read again I see what you mean. You have peeked my interest. I will get back to this one. If thats the case I will be looking for a junk yard tranny and just have them rebuild it. That would probally be easier than just tearing my car apart and leaving it on blocks for a month. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

Yeah all you really need is the TC upgrade. Unless you trying to build beast or something......With that you "should" be safe into the 250-350hp range.

actaully auto's can handle more HP than standards can. thats why some model's of firebirds/camaro's only came with auto w/ the V8 opt.

depends on the car iguess... but i have heard that viper and corvette will be switching to auto pretty soon...

Yes, an automatic has more potential for power. But if you take Stock vs. Stock I believe the MTX can handle more. Could be wrong though.
