Trunk Pics

Hi everyone. First post here. I hope its okay to post a request like this here in this area of the forum. I was wondering if some of you nice people would post a picture of your Mazda 5 trunk, with all three rows up. I have 4 kids so I will need all 3 rows of seats. Just trying to figure out how much trunk space there is, for groceries, strollers, or small pet crate etc. Thanks so much!

you could fit a few bags of groceries and maybe an umbrella stroller with all rows up. it's pretty small...actually, it's tiny.

definitely no room for a small pet crate with the third row up, unless your pet is a spider or lizard.

Go to your local dealer and see how it fits. Take a test drive, drive it home, and see how many people can fit into it comfortably.

Here are two photos I happen to have of mine. For the record, I'm aware that the kids aren't safe in adult buckles. We'd just brought the 5 home the previous night, and they were quite excited by it.

(My M5 is Galaxy Gray)

The depth of the rear compartment is 13 inches at the base and 4 inches at the top with the seats folded up.

You won't be able to fit a stroller in there with the seats up, unless it's a really small umbrella style. I've got a Phil & Ted E3 (a double), and that requires at least one seat to be down. You could probably lay a stroller in the passenger area, but that's a tight fit. I'm assuming that you've got a double or triple stroller.

There's not even a remote chance that you could fit a pet carrier in there with all the kids. With the back row seats up, you've got very little space; essentially, none. You might have trouble fitting the box that the pet carrier came with, even folded up for recycling. Think of it this way - you can fit some cargo in the Mazda5, and some of that cargo can be people.

As for groceries, I propose an alternative: my wife takes one of the kids out shopping on Sunday mornings. The other kid stays behind with me and I use the time to clean the house.

WARNING: READ THE MANUAL BEFORE SITTING A CHILD IN AN AIRBAG-EQUIPPED SEAT.

If that doesn't work, your oldest (4 years old?) may be able to ride in the front in a front-facing carseat. If I remember correctly, the Mazda5 has a sensor to determine the weight of the passenger, and if they are too small (under 75 pounds) the airbag won't deploy. Mazda won't guarantee that, and obviously, neither will I, but it's an option. That would give you one folded down seat's worth of room in the back, which would be enough for a pet carrier or a week's groceries. If that makes you uncomfortable, you could put the groceries or the pet carrier in the front passenger seat. I wouldn't put my kids in an airbag seat.

There's LATCH / UAS in the two middle seats only. There are anchors for all four rear seats.

Now, getting into the rearmost seats will present a challenge. You've got 4, so all four will likely be in seats. Once the middle seats are full of carseat, they don't fold forward very much anymore. You can still adjust them a little (as with any other seat), but they become essentially stuck. They won't move at all unless you use LATCH/UAS. Bending over to fasten the carseat buckles in the third row will be an exercise in agility. It may be easiest to fit them from the back.

4 kids will make for a tight fit! We have had 4 adults and 2 children in our 5 and there was enough cargo room for 2 diaper bags and a few jackets. Luckily, out Kelty Convertible managed to wedge in between the row 2 seats (made a half-decent arm rest. Umbrella stroller #2 had to be in the passenger area as well.

For a long trip, a cargo box on the 5 would make things pretty manageable. Except for the pet carrier. I hope you have an ant farm. Unfortunately, space is a bit limited with the 5, making it a questionable choice if you will generally have 6 on board.

I think the 5 is too small for a family of six. It's a perfect vehicle for a family of four who occasionally has a fifth or sixth passenger for short trips.

Otherwise the rearmost seats are always in the down position in my 5.

We are waiting on #4 this July. So far the 5 has been a great car for our family. It is our primary transportation. We have had 2 adults and 4 kids in the car several times. Day and overnighters are fine. Large vacations would require a luggage carrying device of some type outside the car. I'm looking into a carry-all hitch mount or a small trailer.

Grocery shopping (say Wal-Mart with two carts full) will require one seat folded down or a front seat full and some creative packing, but you can do it. It would be easier to leave the kids with someone, but not required.

Eventually we will put forward facing seats in the rear and a rear facing in the front. For now we have one booster in the front, one front facing in the rear and one without a booster in the rear or front as she desires. Boosters don't seem to work very well in the rear due to the top belt location. Better with no booster or forward facing. I try to leave the middle seat behind the drivers seat open. Makes it easier for me.

I'd go down to the dealership, put all the seats in, (try ALL possible combinations) and find out how it all works. That's what I did. Then ask to take it grocery shopping. They may frown on this, but you might find out what you are looking for.

Perhaps you are near another member?? I'd let you work mine over, but I doubt you are near north east Missouri.

I think the 5 would be the perfect size with 4 kids maybe not 4 big teenagers with football practice and cheerleading but little ones should be good for quite a few years!

Rent one for a weekend. I still think it's too small for a family of 6. With my wife, 1 year old (at the time) daughter, and small dog, it was perfect. Another kid would've been fine, too. But 3 or more would be way to small, me thinks.

Thank you everyone for all your information! I'd love to go look at one and take it for a test drive, but I'm in Germany at the moment and the military auto sales people tell me they have none and the only 2 they have ordered are already spoken for. BUT i'm going back to the states in July so I will have to try it out then. We have two small umbrella strollers, I hate the big bulky ones. My oldest 2 kids are 7 and 8, they will sit in the back. The young ones, 1 and 3 will be in normal carseats in the 2nd row. If rweatherford can do it maybe we can too. A cargo box would for sure be a must if we were traveling I'm sure. The Mazda 5 is just to good to pass up, great price and gas milage with a 3rd row! I will have to update once I get back to the states and try one out. ;) Thank you everyone for all your help!

wanted to add, if its 13 inches back there, my crate just might fit. Its 19L x 12.25W x 10.75H. I'd have a whole .75 left over lol
