Transmission Noise

Recently, I had a Exedy Stage 1 Clutch installed in my msp with the flywheel resurfaced. I've had it done for about 2 months now and I haven't really drove the car long distances until 2 days ago. I went to the beach which was only 2 hours each way. The next day, I started up the car and there was a light rotating noise coming from the transmission. Last night it seemed to be louder. Its definately coming from the transmission. Now, if Im idling with my foot off the clutch then it makes the noise, but not if the clutch is pressed down. If Im moving then it makes the noise the entire time no matter what. It sounds to me like its the throw-out bearing...I'm not sure though. If anybody has any other ideas on what it could be, please let me know. Also, what is the worst that could happen if it is the throw-out bearing? Is it worth paying the $600.00+parts to fix? If it is the throw-out bearing from Exedy, Should I see what they can do for me? Any info on this problem would be very helpful...Thanks.

Since no one responded to my post...I had a trans shop look at it. A bearing shreded and messed up some internal parts such as splines and of course the bearing. I went to Everdrive.com and got a good deal on a used trans w/a warranty.

curious of what that sound was like. Was it a wining type sound, that seemed to match you rpms up to about 2-4k. Did you have any problems driving the car?

throwout bearing issue usually makes a chirping sound. a transmission or axle problem makes a more distinctive sound with acceleration or deceleration. check your gear oil level and replace or add if its low to see if the whine goes away. if not you have internal transaxle issues.

If you've ever had a skateboard or rollerskates with loud bearings, it sounds like that, but louder. At idle, pressing the clutch in, the noise went away. There would always be noise when driving no matter what. And yes, it did match the rpms. The problem with checking the gear oil is that there is a magnet in the trans that suppose to catch all the metal particles so you may not be able to diagnose it. And oh yea, After awhile the trans wouldn't let me go into 2nd & 4th gear. Sometimes I would have to try a couple times (like 8 or 10) before it would go in. Stupid transmission.

Im going to rebuild my old transmission since all the key parts are intact...I have the gtx 3rd & 5th gearset for it. Im going to install those and I haven't figured out if I'm going to sell it or keep it as a backup/built trans.

Shawn if you can keep me posted on ur trans build and whether or not u plan to keep it or sell it. I might be interested in picking it up, i'm up in Jersey. I'm thinking if the trans if already apart to maybe upgrade 4th gear also. Either way I might try to pick one up but I can't have my car out of commission for to long cause I use for work. thanks

just curious, i drove my car last week and the same thing happened 2 me, the car would start but it'll have a clinking sound coming from the tranny, if i engage the clutch it would stop... i drove the car home and it was hard 2 get it in 2nd and 4th. at one point it grinded so bad i had 2 drop it in nutral and put it back into gear.. what was the conclusion with your situation??? thank you

Ok...In the first transmission, I completely destroyed the insput shaft bearing which in-turn destroyed other parts. The second time, I caught the problem before it got too bad. The second time, the raceway on a completely different transmission, but same bearing cracked. I ended getting that one fixed under warranty with everdrive.com. It seems that I'm having the same problem again. Something keeps causing this to happen and Im not sure why, but its time to let this car go.

I just bought an 03.5 MSP from boostedprotegelx and i drove the car for about 500 miles and then parked it to have it painted and wheels powdercoated... I started the car to move it from where it was parked at house and I had this same problem. What do I need to fix? It didn't make any noise before I parked it... At idle it makes grinding noise from trans and when clutch is engaged it goes away. I dunno what it does when driving I don't want to cause more problems. Would a new clutch kit w/ throw out bearing fix this or is there more to it?

Probably the throw out bearing. Fixing that alone should take care of the problem.

k cool am I good to still drive the car for a few weeks til new clutch kit comes or will I mess other things up by driving it?

A chirping noise is more like it when the throwout is bad. Grinding sounds are another story. I wouldn't drive it without tearing it down and replacing what needs to be replaced starting with a new clutch kit at the very least.
