NOTE : there's one more cylinder piece that goes on the main shaft.
It appears to be identical to the older transmissions but it's not shown in the pic.

Hopefully that does the trick, let me know if there's anything I can do to help more.

The reason I'm asking all of this is because I had a guy bring me an 03.5 MSP trans which was missing half of the parts, and I need to know what's missing as well as the exact order and orientation of the parts. Since it differs from the older style transmissions, the documents and diagrams I have don't show me the info I need.

Around mid-year 2002, they changed the 5th gear setup. It has about half the parts of the previous setup (such as in the MP3). I have some exploded views of it somewhere (I hope), but the new version is simpler and has fewer parts - but the actual gears are still the same.

The newer one is awesome.
It doesn't explode into a million pieces when you're trying to put it on the main shaft.

Yeah, I think 02.5 is when they switched it over. The new way is much more elegant, it's just a shame that they didn't update their diagrams to go with it (at least not at my dealer).

This is what I'm looking for though:

(do you have it in full res, btw...perhaps with better lighting?)

This looks how I set up the one I'm working on. I guessed it would be set up like this, minus the fact that I flipped the outer collar on the right, so the angled side is facing down...but that's an easy enough fix. Also, that same collar on the right...that's the one with all of the inner "teeth", correct? I know there's a part in the trans that looks just like that (the 3rd gear collar?) but it's missing a few teeth. I had to order a LOT of parts for this transmission, so I just want to be sure that I didn't mix anything up.

It's hard to tell from the pics, but those two crescent shaped pieces have a flat side, and a side with a beveled edge. I put the beveled edge facing up. Is that how yours is?

Anyway, much thanks to you for the pics. I wouldn't have felt right closing this up without being sure. Should only take me a few mins to flip that collar over and finish the trans.

Also, free tip: since the 34mm shaft nut design sucks, red loctite the nuts on the end of the shafts before you torque the hell out of them with an impact gun. The first two times I rebuilt a trans, I didn't loctite them, and the nuts came loose over time, preventing me from getting into gear. Since then, I loctite them all, and it's been smooth sailing (knock on wood).

Why do you think the 03.5's are different? I've got a s*** ton of pics of my tranny if you need.
They just are.

the black metal oil pan is different, the length of the shafts are different, and the whole 5th gear setup (minus the actual gears) is different. Check out the pics i posed earlier vs Prodigy's. The first time I rebuilt an MSP trans (2 summers ago), I was surpised to see the difference since I had just rebuilt my 01 mp3 trans the month before. The newer way is much more simple.

Lesson learned though - anytime you take something complex apart, take pics of each step as you do it. Unfortunately for me, I couldn't do that with the trans I have in hand, because the guy just brought me a box of parts and said "yeah, there's a bunch of stuff missing".

Ya I see that now, crazy man. But for the 34mm nuts, I didn' loctite them, but I bent in the little tabs to lock them in place, as per the FSM. Are they different for the 03.5's?

The newer nuts that I got from the dealer don't have those tabs.

Either way, they should be loctited. If your car pops out of gear or refuses to go into gear, you'll know why.

Sorry for the thread jack!!

Have you guys replaced gears and synchros? I have my old blown tranny that I brought to a shop to have them crack it apart to find the problem and when they told me it would be $1750 to rebuild it I just got a salvaged one for $500. This was over a year ago.

Anyway I have everything that was in pieces in several boxes
re-assembled back together minus one blown gear that wouldn't go back on the shaft. How hard is it to press the gears off the shaft to swap the gears and get to the synchros??

No, they don't have the tabs already, you need to punch them in and it makes a tab... If they had them already, there's no way in hell that you could get them lined up perfectly to push the tabs in.

Just impact the nut down, then take a chisel or I used a punch and punch the tabs in.

It's kind of a pain, but not the end of the world.

Who all in there has had issues with 3rd gear not wanting to go into gear? Sometimes it will go in just fine and other times it will grind or clunk real hard as I shift it in like you can hear the gears clunking. The tranny is fine other than 3rd gear...what can I do to get rid of this issue?

i got that problem too. in fact, a lotta ppl have it. it pretty much means u have a crapped sycro. i have numerous problems w/ my tranny. i just chose to deal w/ it until the whole thing just craps out on me and then get a rebuilt on or something

How much is a rebuild kit for these trannys? And is it less hassle to just fine a different tranny?

Chris

If your not going with an LSD just do a salvaged tranny for like $500-800. I think the rebuild kit is under $400. I was quoted a rebuild of $1750 over a year ago but found a used one for $509 shipped to me with 28k on it. I had an old version in my 02 P5 assembled in 02/02. I think all the revised parts are in there after 03/02. Revised shift fork and synchros.

Went to the revised synchros and totally fixed the problem for me.

How much does the revised synchros cost? I may just go with those and the LSD from the MSP. The car is getting a FS-ZE from Japan, so I want the tranny to hold up to some decent power but without the issue of 3rd gear, and the "one wheel peel" Thanks for the info though guys!
