Transmission gear inquiry

I have in contact a gearset manufacture that can make gears, the price for a set of straight cut 3rd gear will be around 400$ or less, the manufacture have contract with Honda, Bombardier etc is a big enterprise, they can make me some set of gears if I get enough people for it.

Um... would it be better then stock? if so how? and any stright cut options? and how about 1 2 and 4th gear? and maybe 5th?

only available for the 3rd 4th and 5th to be put on stock shaft, the material will be much better than stock one, en36a or en36c. if i have enough demand i can go with manufacturing the whole shafts. Im tryin to get this business grow beyond mazda community... but this is just an idea right now.

The side load is the issue, but unfortunately we have no choice to modify the gear it self...

There are plenty of choices. People have had the same issues on lots of FWD cars.

I already take mesure of the gear width, first gear width is 0.612, second 0.58, 3rd 0.512, 4th 0.512. See the size of the 3rd compare to the first and second? is rediculous.

With spur cut gears, you will need to use a truly high performance gear oil, and change the gear oil every time you change your engine oil, every 3,000 miles. I'm not saying that the gearbox will just explode, but you will experience surface pitting on the teeth once your oil is sheared to the point that it no longer lubricates and absorbs shock properly. I spoke with PAR for hours about this, and they never recommend spur cuts gears for daily use vehicles, and not because of the noise.

So the next alternative will be helical cut with less helix angle? Isnt helical gear put more stress on oil because the teeth swipe everytime the contact is made between gears?

But really he is the only person I know of to have trouble with the gears, there was a 323 with a msp engine in puerto rico and it was making mad hp. It had PAR gears and the gears didnt break but they split the tranny case in half!!!!! So what im trying to say is that im sure he knows what he is talking about.

If you're really diligent about changing the oil, and can stand the noise, it'll be fine. But I think if we're all honest, most of us will never keep up the oil change intervals needed. Yes, a alternative is a beefier tooth profile and less aggressive helix angle, but the thing is...even PAR flat out won't make helical cut gears anymore for turbo & large displacement cars due to the high axial load they put on the shafts, case, and bearings. A less aggressive helix would help though. When I had my 1-5th straight cut set, it was cool for a while, the noise, but 99% of people just thought the tranny was broken, not custom. It's a toss up really, do you want : A quiet car, less maintenance duty, less $ spent and a limit on the trannys strength OR A loud car, high maintenance, more $ spent, but a high strength tranny ?
