****** Tranny

Knock on wood, but I haven't had any grinding yet. I have had a few issues with it going into second, but that seems to be in the morning when it's cold and then i don't have any other problems.

The reverse problem, I think I've had, but I'll pay more attention since it might not be something I'm doing.

I have the notchy secondgar that so many have complained about as well as the grinding/crunching from 2nd to 3rd. I also have the problem totally engaging reverse and have had the gear grind on several occaisions as a result.

I agree that this is absolutely ridiculous. This doesn't seem to be something isolated to a handful of these cars.... we need to somehow educate mazda to the overwhelming number of vehicles with these problems:mad:

You know this seems to only be a problem with the G tranny I haven't heard any 99-00ers complain about the F tranny no probs with mine.

My tranny is being a B*tch also, Hard a hell to shift into 2nd and Now its starting to Grind goin into 3rd and its hard to shift back into 1st... Im taking it to the Dealer once I get 6000 Miles on it bc they dont want to touch it and they think Its my Sycros needing to be worn in

Synchros needing to be "worn" in? I'm not a gear head or anything but does that sound weird to anyone else. Fortunately I can say that I haven't had any problems, but thats most likely because I don't have the car yet. Three more weeks and counting. However, you all have me a bit scared. Personally I'd get it looked at ASAP. My buddy had problems (same situation you all are having) with the tranny on his WRX and when he brought it in they claimed driver abuse. Now there not paying for the repairs and a whole law suit is happening. Better to get it fixed soon rather than they claim you didn't bring it in when you should have. Hope we can get this issue cleared up.

Sometimes I get grinding when I shift from second to third and I know that sometimes it's not me. I also have problems shifting into reverse but I rev it once or twice and it pops in fine

I just ran across this post for the first time. I have a 5 speed protege 5. My last car was an auto, so at first i chalked it up to not driving a stick regularly, but now it is a little rediculous... 3rd gear throw grinds somewhat often enough to piss me off, and i think it is due to the throw being too long or something, but it pisses me off, I have come to realize that 3rd gear will be a problem for me with this car, and be the first to go. is someone talking to Mazda about this? At first they will say it is our fault, but 2 pages in this one board of people saying the same thing can't be wrong. Plus, I would love to hear a mazda rep tell me I don't know how to drive stick, I will cut him down to a church mouse, and send him home crying to his mommy. Try driving stick in a 80's Chevy 3500 with a huge V8 in New York city traffic, where you have to stand on the clutch in order to shift. Please, this tranny is like a toybox compared, I should be able to do this in my sleep, yet I still grind 3rd???? What the **** gives????

Sorry for ranting!!!

tranny is acting like a granny

Hey guys, I'm having trouble with my tranny too. I'm afraid that it's going to burst on my if it keeps up the grinding. My previous car did not grind like the MP3.

If you guys are going to complain to Mazda, count me in. Mazda planted a complainable trans. in the Protege!!!

the only problem i've had is the downshift to 2nd
not going fast or driving hard. it will go in hard the first time but the 2nd time gets easer 3rd much more easier and so on. i've got abot 3900 miles and i have to bring it in for the reg srvs.
to tell the truth i dont want to bring it to any dealer i dont trust them AT ALL.

tranny

i have a p5 and have some but not all of the probs y'all are saying. so far i have had no problem with 3rd. when coming of the line with the revs up 2nd can be a little stiff to get into. it won't let me down shift into first until i'm below about 25 kilometers/hour, i thought this was on purpose...it seems like a good idea so you don't downshift too soon. the only real problem i've had is getting into reverse from stop. i can sit there all day and try to force it but it won't go. i either have to shift throught all the gears ( with the clutch in the whole time) to kinda line it all up or start coasting a bit then slip it in. i have grinded the gears a couple of times but i assumed i let the clutch out too early. however i will pay closer attention.

regardless i will support any action that is taken with mazda towards a recall or petition or letter. the more support we get from drivers, the more effective any complaint will be.

Well this is kinda good news I guess because my tranny went out on me tonight! I was shifting from 1st to 2nd and it grinded a lot and then it idled rough and finally stalled :( I can't get the car started now, it just cranks but wont turn over. I am hoping I do not have to pay for this s*** and I might need some of you guys to help me out on this one somehow, I don't know if my dealship will warrenty it or not, I sure hope so.

yea nc must have like tranny failure rates from hell, my transmission is fine now, they just changed the fluid and opened her up and messed with some stuff, it still grinds into 5th though still, pisses me off, mazda should of stuck a beefer transmission into the mp3 since they knew that it wasn't going to be driven by 80 year olds.

It seems to be more evident in the G5M-R tranny in the MP3 than the G15M-R tranny in the other newer Protege. I have a '00 ES with a F25M-R tranny so I dont' have this problem but I would definatly be givin a ring to NA operations.

Tranny

OK, guys: We need to be a bit scientific if we want results. Here is my suggestion: Each of us needs to list the model, year, state purchased, mileage, tranny type and tranny model (which I don't know - anyone know what I have?). In addition, we need to list SPECIFIC problems. Finally, we should indicate when each problem began (mileage) and finish with some specific indicators ("only when shifting down", etc.).

Here's my start - feel free to expound upon the theme:

Model: '02 MP5

State: Arizona

Mileage: 3500 Miles

Tranny: Manual 5 (Obvious? What if the auto tranny's prove to have separate issues?)

Tranny Model: (need help here)

Problems:

Reverse: Sometimes does not engage, double-clutch or rev works. Excessive grind at times. Started at 1000 miles.

1st: None.

2nd: None.

3rd: None.

4th: None.

5th: None.

This is the sort of data that makes them take notice.

Transmission details

Model: '02 Protege 5
State: Utah
Mileage: 7,000 miles
Tranny: Manual 5

Problems: Reverse does not always engage like it should. Double-clutching is the only way to engage it. First and second gear have a delay when first engaging, as if they're not all the way connected. They don't really 'work' until 2,500 RPM, when they suddenly kick in and actually accelerate (this is under normal acceleration). Second gear grinds when it's shifted into.
