Model: '01 MP3
Vancouver, B.C.
Mileage: 12300 KM
Tranny: Manual 5

Problems:

1) VERY hard to shift back into 1st.... not until the car is almost to a complete stop....
2) sometimes when upshifting from 2nd to 3rd... even if the clutch is fully in... theres an aweful grinding sound...
3) sometimes it doesnt allow me to go into 1st at all.. not until i ram it in 2nd then ram up to 1st...
4) sometimes it doesnt allow me to go into reverse...

No troubles with mine so far....knock on wood.

2001 MP3

9000 kms

Couple of things to note though from my experince with standards on small cars. I've driven sticks since I was 16. Learned on a stick, and drive nothing but.

Most cars won't go into 1st while moving. Some it's a safety feature, others...just picky. All 8 Honda's I've had before this would never go into 1st until I was almost stopped. At least without really forcing it...which I wouldn't advise. So far, the MP3 doesn't seem any different. The colder any car is, the harder it will be to put her into first ....this is pretty much normal.

As for reverse, this one is weird. You guys seem to be having some really not so normal problems with this. I'm lucky so far, but I never put the car in reverse unless I'm totally stopped. Just a habit.

going to 2 to 3rd, doesn't feel any different to me then 1st - 2nd. But, I usually shift around 3500-4000rpm most of the time. The times when I'm playing with the car....and shifting higher...well, so far so good. I did grind it once from 2-3, but to tell you the truth, I think the floor mat caught the mat. I've noticed that damn floor mat is always getting caught in the clutch.

I will say one thing, the Honda tranny's are way smoother then the protege's. Honda does know how to make a really good standard. The auto's however, different story. Ironically though, My last Civic was much harder to get into reverse then the mp3. I hated it. Every other gear was smoother though. the 97' lude I had, still the best tranny I've ever driven....smoooth. I miss that car ( long story)

I wish you guys luck with this. This is scary stuff.

Tranny problems......

Here is my list:

Model: 2001 - 2002 MP3, Production # 905, blue

State: Wisconsin, but purchased in Ill.

Mileage: 4699

Problem list;
1). Hard to shift from 1st into 2nd gear.

2). Started to Grind at 2000 miles on gear 2, 3 and somtimes 5. (I know it is not me who is causing the grind, I've been driving a manual since I was 16.)

3). Hard to get into reverse sometimes.

4). Transmition feels loose somtimes, like it's going to fall apart.

you guys do realize that its supposed to be hard to shift into 1st gear... it IS a safety feature and i cant remember exactly aids in this but until your going under 10-15 mph you cant shift into first unless you really force it.... maybe all these trannies are going out from the way you guys are diving your cars...

Well, one thing I can add that I've noticed, is that my clutch HAS to to be in all the way in order to have a clean shift. Some cars, you can get away with just sticking it in a little. I find, the MP3 clutch a little less forgiving for this stuff.

i don't know how most of you guys are driving your cars, but I laugh at the ricer boys around here. They drive around, got their cars reving around 6000 rpms all day ( or whatever their red line is), and then b**** about tranny and engine problems. These people, well, they just ask for it. Not saying that any of you are doing this though, but there are people that drive bad, and get what they deserve.

But, if there is something really wrong with our trannes.....we need this resolved asap.

Interesting enough though, I've never heard of any protege around here having troubles.

Yeah, Im getting the same problem shifting back into 1st now, I got like 4100 Miles on my car so I gotta wait for another 1900 Until I can get in and they look at the Tranny... which sux b/c Its soooooo hard to get it in gear sometimes.

And I dont drive my car like a mean ****, I dont speed shift or slam in into gear driving normally, I raced a couple times but nothing to really beat my tranny

add me to the list too
hard to get into first from N.
hard to get into reverse, have to ease the clutch, then it will slip in.
grinds when shifting from 2 to 3, not always, might be driver error on that one too.

add me to the list, ive got 9000 miles and my car has grinded when shifting into 2nd and 3rd gear since about 1500 miles, it is also now hard to get it into reverse... every time it grinds in reverse....

PS. i modified a later post because i just have this same problems.

Difficult to get into 1st gear. This occurs from a stop or rolling slowly. It does get a bit easier after the fluid warms up.

Haven't experienced any grinding unless it was a user error.:D

This has happened since day1 10,000 miles just turned over on the way to work this morning.

well, i posted earlier that my transmission was "fixed", well its ****** again, tonight on the way home from myrtle it was grinding going into every gear with the clutch all the way to the floor, then i pulled into a gas station and put it in nutrual and it stalled out. i waited like 15 minutes and restarted the car and everything seemed fine, really really strange, hopefully everything will be alright, if not i guess i get to go back to stevenson on monday.

Clutch release problems...

I'd go to the dealer and have them adjust the clutch pedal.

Proteges (all Mazdas I think) have a hydralic clutch, and the clutch pedal releases in different places depending on how it is adjusted. That might be part of the problem with the clutch engaging just off the floor or just at the end of the clutch movement (all the way out).

I saw somewhere that there is a bolt that can be adjusted somewhere in the engine compartment (where the clutch comes through the firewall) to adjust the clutch release. It's either there, or up under the dash board. A shop should be able to fix it easily enough.

I doubt that the hydralic cylinder is leaking (master or secondary), that usually doesn't happen for awhile. Somewhere near 90,000 miles or seven or eight years. It all depends though.

Those are two things to look into for clutch issue.

As for grinding, that usually occurs when the syncros aren't all lined up. Fast shifts, or down shifting can cause this a lot. You don't have to have the clutch completely depressed to pull out of a gear, but you do need that to put it into gear. The syncros usually line up on their own when the clutch is completely depressed while disengaging a gear to go to the next higher one.

I have had some grinding going from first into second gear, but that was becuase of user error, based on the above paragraph.

I hope this helps some, and I hope I didn't royally get things wrong.:)

well i get my car back tomorrow finnaly they replaced the clutch flywheel and tranny but they said next time they are not going to fix it if it does it again! so if they dont i am going to talk to the owner of the dealership if he wont do it time for another dealership or a phone call to mazda usa!

I sometimes have to shift into reverse twice... first time is in but doesn't work.. so I go to neutral and back to reverse then it works.
Annoying!

welli called to check on my car and they laughed and said we are sorry we ordered the wrong part we ordered a automatic tranny it will be a few more days i am so pissed:mad:

Own blue mp3

my only complaint is shifting from 1st to 2nd......i have grinded it twice......the throw from 1st to 2nd seems far....but the shift from 3rd to 4th is smooth........I dont understand........I do have the problem downshifting into first, or shifting into first while moving.....I do believe this is normal..........

I will listen and pay attention to this more.....i alwasy have the radio blarring.......so i will keep it off for a while to listen to my tranny.........

Vegas,

Supposedly 1st and reverse have no syncronizers. So make sure your speed is low enough before shifting into 1st.
