2003 Mazdaspeed Protege
Hey everyone, this is my second thread since I've joined, and I've got a few questions. Some of you know, I just got a Black Mica 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege that once the warranty is through I will be modifying. Its primary goal is to be an auto cross car, but since there isnt much I can do mechanically without the dealership throwing a fit, Im starting to think cosmetically. Personally, Im not much for show. I've always liked the black on black "all business" look on cars. No chrome lip, straight black. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what kinds of rims I should be looking at, and I'd also like to know what kind of tires you guys are using for your MSP, because that needs to be done soon (guy I bought it from left me with really low tread on all four )

This site is great, and I love my car. Keep it up guys! (drinks)

Thanks for the feedback, but I've got a few questions about the Rota Slipstreams. Are they sturdy enough for daily use, or is it designated for track only? It's be nice to add some functionality of weight reduction like that with a very nice set of flat black rims. The tires are nice, but I couldn't use those daily. Treads tend to wear quick on tires like those, although the grip is phenomenal.

those tires, i would most likely use only for track, unless you do some hard daily driving of course.. i wouldn't recomend those tires for the rain though..

Hey Proto- where do you live? Do you want to autox on the same tires you drive on the street with?

I live in Harford County, MD. Money suggests that I do auto cross with the same set of tires, but what will most likely happen is me using what my car has for now, and then buying an alternate set of tires designated for track use.

I have two different pairs of tires on my car.

Rear: Kumho ECSTA MX.
Front: BFGoodrich g-Force KDW

The Kumho tires do very well .. but I'm in love with the BFGoodrich tires. But they're pretty expensive, due to the performance level and because I run a 35 series on an 18" x 7.5" wheel.

My Azenis run fine in the rain, and they are the ultimate street tire to be used for Auto-cross. If you have the money to buy R-comps for autocross, then I would suggest getting Yokohama AVIDs for your all-season tire. They last forever, but aren't the most sporting all-season. Toyo Proxes4 are great sport all-season tires, but are a bit more pricey.
