tiptronic efficiency

hey i have an auto p5 and i was just curious to no if any one new for a fact that the tiptronic shifting makes a tru difference in acceleration.

if it is tru...whats the best way to effectively use it for the best accelration

thnx all

shift at 5500 rpms. beyond that without any significant mods and you're losing power. good luck.

So, a tiptronic P5 would have better acceleration than a regular auto p5?

Not really. The only difference is that you can sort of control where it shifts. It's still the same transmission, just more electronics to control it.

theoretically yes. practically, i have no clue. a regular auto p5 generally shifts out of 1st at a max of 4500-5000 rpm, which is right before peak power. so maybe?

I think even for the normal auto, if you floor the gas pedal, it should go up pretty near redline in 1st, then shift to 2nd. All auto cars that I've driven do that.

if you shift at 5500 it will fall out of the powerband in 2nd

go to the redline, I dare ya

I was thinking about the same thing that 5500 rpm is too low, but wasn't sure what the first guy meant by "best acceleration". For smoothness? For max speed?

why do you wanna shift an auto? if you are racing youjust put it to the floor, and it will shift at red line

once i realized the factory shift points were set well below the powerband on the auto (for "normal" driving), i stopped using that "feature" and use the tiptronic All the time. the only reason i didn't get the five speed was that the car was originally purchased for my wife, and she can't/won't drive stick. now that i drive it every day, it's become a "clutchless manual" lol (cheers)

I have the sport A/T as well on my 2003.5 P5. For max. acceleration just floor it. The car shifts just shy of redline and does it as quick as the sport stick.

where the sport stick comes into play is when cornering. I use the manual mode to keep the engine up in the powerband so there is no "auto mush" lag when exiting the corner at speed. And, since the engine is up there in revs it seems to give better cornering control than when in regular auto mode where backing off the accelerator leads to temporary "coasting" and a significant loss of power to wheels!

The auto stick will never beat a standard for acceleration, but damn, my left bum knee is sure happier with this compromise! lol

fks

agreed, Feldenkrais. Basically, it's a matter of personal preferrance, and i prefer to be able to control my shifts. (damn, shoulda got the 5-speed! Wife be damned! j/k) I do, however, feel that it does allow for slightly better straight line performance, imo. Plus, it sounds pretty cool when down-shifting! lol (cheers) And after having my left knee nearly crushed a few years back.....But I'd still rather have the stick! I'd deal with the pain!
