ticking noise

I have a p5 and just recently it has started to make a ticking noise. wether its is park drive or idling it makes a fast ticking noise. But you can only hear it inside the car but the noise is comming from outside, I think it is between the motor and the firewall. Whats to prob??????????????

Ticking back in the old days was normally a result of a lifter..Today things have changed so much who knows. Try to track down the sound more.

I know that when I first start up my P5 in the morning, it ticks some, but after about 5 minutes of driving, it goes away. Just wondering if it might be the same thing.

It ticks on occasion, but not all the time. my protege5 ticks as well. I'm probably just used to it. so it doesn't really bother me that much anymore.

If its coming from the engine chances are it does that because some of the oil has settled down inside the motor. As the motor runs the oil is pumped back up top & gets thinned out a little..reaching the place where it ticks.

Yah...it's real stupid. I noticed it the first day I got my car, and it hasn't gone away since. My mom has a protege ES, and her's doesn't do it, so I don't know what the deal is. I want to take it to the dealer to get it checked out, but I know they are gonna give me hell for changing the intake.

the tick from the valve train is normal in miata's and protege's due to the design of the lifter/actuator shim it'll tick a little. Problem #2 is the drain/fill holes in the lifters are some of the smallest in the industry. There's really not much you can do to make it go away. It won't hurt anything as long as you frequently change the oil...if you use conventional oil I recommend using 1 to 1/2 quart of ATF every two or three oil changes just to clean the drain/fill holes out.

Thanks for the great info, 20ESGUY! I use 5W-50W Castrol Full Synthetic. How does this pass through? Does clogging occur? If it does, how do you remove it with synthetic (obviously can't use ATF)?

I hear a put put put noise when it sits at idle sometimes.... when I press the accelorator it goes away. This noise only came when I had my intakes put on. I happend with the 1.6L Protege and my MP3... Is that the noise you guys a re making reference to?

Lifters would make the most noise when the engine is cold & tends to go away after its warmed up. Your problem sounds to be different.

It's just a real fast ticking noise and it drives me crazy the only way i cant hear it is when i rev the motor, this does not stop it but to sound of the intake and exhaust drowns it out, if I have to guess what it was i would say it is a pump of some kind...... Maybe oil it is almost time for it to be changed.... But it has not always done this just after i installed the intake.

As far as I know there shouldn't be any problems with using synthetic other than a slightly louder tick possibly. Personally I use 5-30 Mobil and haven't had any probs with close to 20k on it since Sept. The viscosity of the synthetic is much higher so it doesn't break down and sludge up like organic based oil. Just keep the oil changes frequent and you shouldn't have a problem. Oh btw, just a side note on the subject of oil changes....don't use Fram filters....that's probably the worst filter on the market the Autozone brand filters actually have more pleats and surface area than the Fram's do.

What's ATF?

Your ticking noise may also be coming from a small pump that is located on your intake pipe that is there for emissions purposes and pumps out excess fumes into your carbon canaster.

Yep, My MP3 does the same thing. It ticks at idle, and when I hit the throttle, I hear a fast putt-putt sound between 2900 and 4000 RPM. This happened after I notice my oil was low, and got an oil change. It hasn't gone away yet! I used fuel system cleaner and all. I think that it is either a lifter, shim, or bearing knocking around in there.

If you're saying to put ATF in with the oil, isn't that kinda bad? I thought you weren't supposed to put anything in there except for oil, as stupid as that sounds.

I dunno...maybe I'm just stupid.

A little bit won't hurt. It's effectively just a thinner grade. It also has animal fats in it...go figure.

so what you're saying is it's edible? :D

yum yum

hehe...just joking...don't anybody eat ATF...although I think drink would be a better term than eating.
