tick tock, tick tock...

Just wondering, for everbody that has had a problem with a wierd ticking sound coming from the engine, if you ever got it to the dealer and what they said. I know a few of you said you were takin it in for it. Just asking cause its drivin me nuts. And my dealer is booked up for a couple weeks. just need to know if its normal.

My wife Focus SVT ticks, my old GTI ticked, my old DSM clicked, a Saturn I had way back clicked.

I'm guessing its normal. Don't know what causes it, though.

Did you happen to add a CAI/SRI? I noticed what sounded to me like a lifter tap (sorry I was raised on small-block OHV engines, it's all I can equate it to) after I installed my Injen so I was doing some searches and I can't remember who, but they said that everyone they had talked to had noticed a tap after they installed their CAI. I am assuming that means the sound is always there, but becomes more apparent with the extra engine noise that comes from the intake.

I have the same ticking at idle. My friend and I think it my be my valves. I am going to take it into mazda soon to have them check it out.

if it was anything it will not be the valves, but the lash adjustment/valve adjustment. Its easy to check, just pull the valve cover, buy a feeler gauge or equivalent. Read in the shop manual what the specs are and check to see if its within specs.

Every 4 cylinder I have owned has ticked. Both the Nissan and Mazda engines lasted past 100k miles. My friends Ford 4 cylinder ticked the worst.
I'm not going to worry about it.

Mine is really loud, but the "Master Tech" at the dealer claims it's normal for this engine. They also claim the pulling to the left and clunk from the rear suspension is normal, so that shows you what they know.

I feel that the tick is also normal. Just the design of the lifters makes noise. I have seen many of heads with this design. Someone on here was wanting to do a hydraulic conversion to see if it would cut back on the noise. but I could never come up with the correct parts, i had many parts that were hydraulic, but they were the wrong engine and therefore were different. Most of my parts were from the KL

thanks for all the quick replys. No intake all stock. was listening this morning. It actully sounds like it is coming from the turbo area, almost like its under the heat shield and maybe the heat shield is amplifying it??? Its MUCH worse when the engine is cold......hmm.............tick tock, tick tock I'm goin batty.

I too have the tick & it seems to come & go. It will get louder & then you can barely hear it & it does so independently of the fan. You can also feel the vibration in the plastic pipe that runs to the rear of the engine.

i have a tick that comes from an area just to the right of the throttle body. It seems to come on after some hard driving. It will go tick tick tick tick for about 15 seconds, then it goes off again, it goes back and forth doing this. I have compared the ticking on my car to Girths car, which is stock, after he got done running the autox. His was there as well, but not as loud. It seems like it comes from these two valves that are connected vertically above eachother on the pipe coming from the TB, right as it curves down towards the center of the engine, IIRC. I have had it for awhile, but didnt notice it until after i had increased boost and opened up the intake. But then again i was more paranoid to engine sounds after that.

Most likely the ticking is a little valve lash. It could also be the fuel injectors or the spark plug wires. Try reseating the spark plug wires, perhaps one is not on all the way and the ticking you are hearing is the spark plug wire ARCing. This could be a bad thing and if left as is, will make it so you need to replace that wire.

As for the lifters, you'll be looking for a while. With Overhead cam engines, there are no lifters. No push rods either for that matter...

I've changed my spark plugs twice now (stock to copper & back to stock), so I thought maybe it had something to do with those, but I always check to make sure the wires are in all the way. I have no idea what exactly it's from.

refering to the pipe running form the intercooler to the T.B.??

I always forget the names of the different parts, so maybe this will help.

This is where I feel the vibration of the ticking the most.

black majik
that is where i hear mine coming from too.
right above the tip of that red arrow is the two valve/hose things i am refering too.
Does yours go on and off?
mainly after heavy boosting?
