Yep, same as yours. I've had that pic saved since I first came on here, so I don't remember where I got it from.

Most likely the ticking is a little valve lash. It could also be the fuel injectors or the spark plug wires. Try reseating the spark plug wires, perhaps one is not on all the way and the ticking you are hearing is the spark plug wire ARCing. This could be a bad thing and if left as is, will make it so you need to replace that wire.

As for the lifters, you'll be looking for a while. With Overhead cam engines, there are no lifters. No push rods either for that matter...

Yeah they have lifters. Solid type.
 
There's something atop the intake, almost right there, called the purge control valve. I beleive it's for some sort of emissions, and after I installed my intake, and relocated the purge control valve, it seemed to be a tad louder, to me. Not sure, but it just sounds like emissions equipment opening and closing. My old Volvo had all the emissions stuff removed, save the cat and O2 sensor, and it stopped ticking as madly as it was. =) Who knows. I'll go look into it in a bit, though.

My bad, I'm thinking "Hydrolic Valve Adjusters" but now that I think about it... it's the same damn thing. I have a damn 302 V8 stuck in my head, and I'm imagining the whole pushrod setup vs overhead cams... I don't miss pushrods.

Yes, new "lifters" would prolly help if the ones that are in the Protege now are not hydrolic. Also, larger oil galleys in the valve adjusters could allow a little more oil to squirt up in there and quiet things down.

My Subaru had some crazy loud ticking, most of it is coming from the injectors though. Unplug the injector... click goes away.

My tick comes from the left of the engine, just opisite to that arrow. Ive taken it to 2 dealerships, both said it was way louder than normal when i droped it off. Then the next day they both called me back saying its normal, WTF?? Ive taken it to 2 friends who have msp's and they have a tick, nothing as loud as mine. Vega claims his is as loud as mine but i never got a chance to hear it.

It sounds like someone has a coin there tappin againts something metal. Mines loud on cold, warm, runnin hard, sound never changes, increases time when throddel increased.

i can feel it in the frekin car as well.

REALLY ANNOYING AT DRIVE THRUS!!! I have had people ask me wtf is wrong with my car. :(......i will get this fixed, just may take some time.
