Thoughts on 16 vs 17

From the side and from farther away?

Front? Sure. Otherwise, eh.

Almost always from the side. I car-watch during lunch, so it's cross-traffic. 16.5 and older I can easily distinguish from 17s (which granted, i've not seen many of) from the squinty headlights and the door swoop. CX-5 I can easily pick out from Lexus, RAV4, CR-V (in all its different butt shapes across year models), Infinitis, Rogues, etc. Easy for me. Maybe because I have fresher eyes? Dunno, but they aren't lost in some indistinguishable morasse, IMO.

Exactly. 16.5 and older CX-5's are easy to distinguish.

17s on the other hand... (shrug)

Saw a 2017 coming towards me one evening with it's lights on, looked scary. Looks great in pictures, but in real life...kind of like those dating sights where you think the woman looks hot, but once you see her in real life...well.. enough said.

Unfortunately, in this case it would be a $30k+ mistake instead of a $30 dinner. ;)

Seen a few 17's in the wild now, and I still have to sit there looking at it to figure out if it's a CX-5.

Fully agree.

Really? The only thing that looks that much different is the front end. The rear is the same and the overall shape is very similar. What are you confusing it with?

Still like the overall look of the CX-9 and CX-3 better, but the new CX-5 is not a bad looking car. I find the pre-17 cars with 17" wheels to be dumpy looking and the 17 at least makes these lower levels look nice.

It has HUD among other things. Now all my cars have HUD, LED headlights and start with a button. I don't see it as a mistake. ;)

Since they got rid of the side swoop, it's hard for me to tell it's a CX-5 from the side from a bit of a distance. Right next to it it would be pretty easy.

What an amazing mix of hyperbole and confirmation bias happening here. Some like it, some don't... happens with every year of every vehicle so get over it (talking only to the few that want to ram the same opinion down our throats over and over...)

Agreed. The photos really don't do it justice. There's no contest when it comes to the interior. It's like comparing the 2015 Mazda 6 interior to the 2016. Can't tell me Mazda hasn't been making huge strides in the cabin. Or the old CX9 interior to the new one. It's like their designers woke up one day wanting to compete with Lexus and Audi.

Really? You can't tell the difference in headlights from a bit of a distance? Or the end of the hood? Sounds like a swoop hangup :)

Of course I can, but that's what I am saying. It takes me a bit longer to tell a 17 CX-5 from the herd versus older CX-5s I see on the road that are instantly identifiable.

Probably just me I guess.

The beauty of the 2017 CX-5 is on the inside. I prefer the look of the 2016 model, but it is missing some nice features that the 2017 model has.

The first time I came across a 2017 CX-5 on the road, I was puzzled. I spotted it from a distance, a white one in front of us on the highway. I told my wife, hey look it's a white CX-9. Then as I got closer I was like, that is not big enough to be a CX-9. I didn't even realize it was the new CX-5 until I got close enough to pass it LOL. So the description of "baby CX-9" is on point. Not a fan of the white color on the 2017 model. I think you need a darker color to show off the curves better on this new design.

I like the new body. They went from cute to elegant.

No I wouldn't judge that as a mistake either. If a car is called such only because it doesn't impress when seen from a certain angle or two, then all cars are arguably a mistake, from the first-gen CX-5 to the most expensive car on planet.

Yes, as you ought to know, being an Aussie, if the bird poop doesnt get your car, fair chance that a branch will unexpectedly fall off that gumtree you parked under, and smash onto your car.

Parking under trees is not a good idea. Just get a good tint on the windows and use a sunshade on the inside if the screen when parked in the sun.

The chances of these things happening is remote. Besides if we tried to do what you said, we wouldn't be able to park anywhere. Most streets/roads have trees on the footpath/pavement overhanging the road where cars park

I don't find the 17s difficult to distinguish.

Same here. The previous model looks a bit more compact, compressed and sort on stilts if you will. The new model gives the illusion of being longer, more swoopy

Agree. More refined, evolved

It certain areas yes, and others, not so much. The front for instance, way too much empty/wasted space. Just looks awful. The 16 Cx5 has the small LED fogs and it looks okay. The 17 CX5 looks even worse.

I find the front end fine but agree with you on small led fogs. They started this on the Mazda6. They should make it larger than they are but smaller than the halogens on the 2014s

Each to their own :)

Yeah but I mean I guess they can't really do much about it since LEDs are small by nature. That's why I feel the 16 CX5 helps the cause as it has that plastic design piece surrounding the LED.

Either year though, the CX5 still best looking CUV! Imo
