Thottle Question

The protege5 is built with basically all of the throttle within the first 1inch of pedal movement. I like that except when it's raining outside. I have found several times that if it's raining, and especially if I am making a turn, that it's very hard to get traction. I can do things to gain traction, ease off the throttle or shift to a higher gear. If I ease off the throttle I basically let off it completely since I am barely touching the throttle and the engine is trying to do 3,500rpm with no traction. If I shift into a higher gear that tends to work, but today I didn't gain traction until 3rd gear. Even in 2nd gear with barely any pressure on the throttle I still didn't have any traction. Any one else notice this? I know in most cars you just ease into the throttle and if you lose traction you ease off it and you can keep traction and acceleration by easing into it, but with the p5 you can't do that because the throttle is so "touchy" with most of the power being put down within the first inch or so of pedal movement. I know when I drive my dad's truck some times I am so used to the p5 that I end up almost not accelerating at all because I forget I have to actually put pressure on the throttle in his truck for it to go.

May sound like a stupid question but how are your tires? I know my 03 Protege LX had a similar issue as your p5. I changed my tires and I got traction back. The throttle is still touchy, but it's much better with the new tires.

Good luck! :)

I know it's all apart of the zoom zoom factor to give the car pep when you touch the throttle so it's all power or no power, 100 horsepower or no power (exagerated but you get the idea) so you touch the throttle and think the car is fast but then you push it down more and nothing happens lol, I like how they did that but it's really tricky when trying to gain traction.

Doesn't sound right. I know some people tighten up their throtte cables or whatever so its somewhat stiff so within an inch of pushing the accelerator its pretty much like at WOT

This is the reality of front drive and an open diff. It's not a wrx--take it easy in limited traction conditions.

A lot of the torque comes in at 1500 rpm. It's easy to have wheelspin, more so with "lesser tires" in the rain such as the stockers.

I start in 2nd gear anyways b/c of that factor, and esp. in the wet.

when my P5 was NA, i don't remember having an issues like that. Try wearing a pair of this soled shoes. That'll give you a better feel for the pedal. You'll see how you have to modulate the throttle.

I only experience something similar when I had bald tires. Maybe yours are overinflated?

I got the same issues as well.

Crap/wore tires are my casue.

Werd, I used to be able to do mini burnouts while making turns and not really trying to do it either. So much TORQUE. Haha.

Of course, this was on bald tires.

Pedal in both of my proteges feel fine. there's more than an inch of play from part to full throttle...
