Okay I finally got my downpipe in. Nice gains, definetly faster spool up. Although, Im not sure how good my gains would be since all I have is just the DP. So its basically its from stock s-pipe to the Apex 3" catless DP back to stock axelback exhaust.

My one concern is, and I know it sort of normal without having a cat, but can you smell your exhaust sitting at a light with your windows down? I was sitting at a light, no wind or anything, and I could just smell it, terrible :(

yes, downpipe has been the best bang for the buck besides mbc that i have put on my car. It is so nice i love the way it sounds now with the stock catback. Nice little rumble and not too loud.

I also have catless and i can smell it all the time.

The other day i had my friend drive my car and i followed in his and when he went WOT i could smell it so far behind. You should also start noticing some backfire.

Havent noticed any backfiring YET.

Also, I havent gotten a CEL yet either, and I didnt install the MIL eliminator either. I have the o2 connected and in the pipe but no CEL.

Also, what are some ways to avoid the 1st gear banging from the exhaust? Kartboy Hangers?

Thanks

you will get a cel soon enough, prob after like 200-300 miles, that's when i got mine. Others have been lucky to get none though.

Yea get the kartboy hangers.

I have no banging on mine though.

i can answer your questions......i have the 3" apex....and it would bang all day on rough roads and bumps....took it into mazda for an oil change....had the mech look at it....and had him slightly heat up the (torch) welded hangers coming off the pipe, and bend them down so the pipe sits lower....that little difference has terminated this problem.....

if you'll notice, when the car is jacked up....the middle of the 3" pipe...has little clearance near its hanging point....so the methos aformentioned is necessary to stop any banging.....

I've got the same pipe and drive on the crappiest roads every day. Kartboy hangers help but going slow over bumps is the best thing to do. The smell is from unburnt fuels leaving the exhaust without any cats to cook them off and there's not much to do but pretend you're in a 455 GS w/o the badass V8. You'll also want to hook up the MIL down the road, just to be safe. It takes all of 20-30 minutes to get it out, soldered and back in.

I get the backfiring a ton with the new replacement muffler. Is backfiring bad in any way? I can prevent some of it by not down shifting.

THanks,
Ryan

I could smell it too when i installed my Corksport exhaust before I added a cat. It turned out I had a bit of a leak.
Cam backfired like a mofo, still does with the cat but less often.

Your car is not backfiring. Mazdaspeeds run really rich air fuel ratio and that sound is little fireballs. I am not joking my brothers wrx does the same thing i have even seen the flame a couple times, its like a blue spark. Nothing to worry about it will not cause damage.

I have the apex Catless downpipe with an electric exhaust cut-out and mine sounds like a damn gun shot when I have it open and it back fires and friends that are driving behind me see the flames from the bottom of the car. Pretty cool, get a cut-out and you smell it all even if your windows are up!

Except melt your polyurethane lip.

Trust me, backfiring is cool but over time it will melt and eat apart your bumper. In my old galant vr4 that thing would run rich as a muther ****** and over time my rear bumper melted above the exhaust.

I finally got my CEL.

If I dont install the MIL, and just choose to look at the light all the time, will there be ill effects on how the O2 sensor sends info back to the ECU?

MIL typically throws a car into "limp mode" and in the interest of self preservation runs even richer. Not sure what it does to our cars, but I think it's same. In my 30 mile commute to work I burned more gas than usual when my MIL Eliminator came loose.

Do a search for spark plug anti foulers. I did what the thread stated. You get them both and drill them out to 1/2 ", and then screw them both together, then screw the O2 sensor into it. Then screw the whole shabang into your exhaust. I got a cel within 5 minutes of going catless. I've had no cell for 1,000 miles now. Others have gone the last 2 years without a cel.
