the screech

Yes i know, there are other threads going on about the same topic. However, there seems to be people that think it's the waste gate actuator while some think its the turbo, stock plastic pipes etc. Also saw a thread where the dealership replaced everything including turbo, wastegate, pipes, etc. and it still wasnt fixed.

So my car has the screech, but only when it has warmed up. At part/half throttle when the car is warm, the turbo spools like normal, no weird/out of the ordinary sounds. Then when more than half throttle is given past say 3500rpm, the screech comes alive. I cannot tell if i'm loosing power or not, and do not have a boost gauge(will soon hopefully) to see if i'm low on boost.

What is the consensus? What have been some of ya'lls personal experiences and finds with this mysterious sound? Is it something i should be worried about? Should i take it to the dealership to try to get whatever they feel necessary replaced since i still have warranty left? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated. I just bought my car a week ago, it has 18.5k miles, and this sound just bothers me not knowing exactly what it is. Thanks

I've never experienced any sort of screeching sound. Only after about 4800 rpm does the turbo start to sound real loud and almost screech. As long as you're still stock take the car to the dealer. You've still got over 30000 miles left on that good ol' warranty. Do you have any sound clips of the sound? That would help diagnose the problemo.

i think i have what you described. it's like you hear the turbo spooling up, but there's also another sound that accompanies it as if another tube was opened up

I don't have any sound clips and being on dial up internet doesnt help any either. If anyone else is experiencing the sound and has the ability to post a sound clip, that would be great.

The noise reminds me of when i was younger and would put a blade of grass between my thumbs and blow if that makes any sense whatsoever haha. thanks

I have this too. Sound clips wouldn't help as the sound is too faint to be picked up inside the car. You would have to be there in person. I'm not sure what causes this either, I thought maybe it was a ball-bearing turbo thing since my last car was a journal. I'd be interested to see if anyone is expiriencing this with metal hotpipes, exhaust, etc.

It doesn't sound like a bad screech. (ie: compressor blades hitting the housing) Although if you want, you could take off the inlet pipe and check the housing, around the wheel, for any signs of scaring; I seriously doubt that's the culprit unless our cars were ragged pretty hard by they're previous owners, ball bearing turbos are known to have minimal if any play in outer directions.

I agree, i would like to know if anyone with hardpipes, exhaust etc was having the same sound. I'm planning to get a boost gauge soon to make sure i am seeing full boost. Do any of you have a boost gauge and the screech and can confirm how much boost you're running? thanks

i have the same problem and i do lose boost like 1-2 psi cause i have the unichip at 10psi and it would sometimes only go to 8 or 9psi then slowly drop off. this doesnt happen all the time but sometimes it does. as for the screeching sound it starts at about 4k rpm and gets louder as it rises. today i havent lost any boost so i dont know wat the problem is. it boosts up fine but well see later on after i leave classes what happens.

Yardman-i see you have a fmic, so it couldnt be the stock pipes in your case. Do you think it could be the wastegate? Thanks for your input

I have a MAM mid-pipe, the turbo hoses smic and hard pipes, Unichip, and greddy profec spec2, and I can hear a sound that is similar to what others are describing. Mostly occurs right after start up, and only at lower rpms.

That seems to be a different sound than what i am experiencing. Like yardman said it's around 4k rpm and up. When i first start my car in the morning the noise isnt there, but as soon as it's at normal temperature the screeching sound starts at/around 4k rpm. Thanks for the input though, i appreciate it. Keep it coming guys, good info.

I dont know i was loking at the wastegate today and it loked normal so i dunno i wanna tru getting another turbo and swapping it and seeing if it was the turbo or somethign else.

Sounds good, let me know what you find. I"m going to call a mazda dealership today and see if they can do some warranty work on it, maybe i can get a new turbo :)

no i was told this 2 days ago so i have yet to make an appointment to get it put on.. but he was very confident about it being the ac compressor

Let me know how it goes. I'm taking mine this coming up monday to the dealership to see what they can do. My main concern is the noise, but i'm going to also get them to fix the clunk in the rear and slight water leak while they're at it. All of this, including turbo/wastegate/ac compressor should be cover under warranty correct? thanks
Derrick

yes it should.. as long as everything is stock. my worranty is gone though, but im taking it in tomorrow morning and ill keep u guys updated and see how everything turns out

The sound your describing I also have, I think. It's incredibly difficult to get a sound clip of that only because if your at 4500 RPM's your moving pretty quick in your car. The turbo spools which I can hear through the Intake, then around that same RPM range (4500) it almost whistles and I drop 2 lbs of boost. I don't think anything is wrong, thats the wastegate opening and preventing overboost. Really without hearing the noise(which like i said is nearly impossible to record) it could be anything. But I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer told you nothing was wrong. keep us posted cause I could be wrong.

I used to get that same noise I think its the same. I havnt heard it in a very long time either though. I think it stopped after I put my boost controller in and upped my boost
