The Protege 5... What do you have to say about it?

Hey,
I am looking to get into a new car finally. After a few months of saving and searching, my searching has led me to the Protege 5 wagon. I love this car. I am from Calgary, and it just seems so practical for me, seeing as I bike, snowboard, etc. I am looking to purchase a 2002. Unfortunetly I am going to purchase from a dealership if no enticing private sales come up. I am a car enthusiast, and with every purchase I make, I like to learn as much as I can about it before hand, hence the reason I am on this forum now. So if you guys don't mind, can you please share some points of views, opinions, comments, etc. you may have about this car. Anything will help. I guess some of it has to rationlizing as well, I am looking to spend up to 15,000 dollars, and when there is that much money on the line I like to be convinced and pushed to do it. So if you guys have any good things or bad things to say about the car, please share.
Thanks! (drinks)

Welcome!
Check the Protege5 section and I'm sure you'll find plenty of posts with general talk about the P5. I love mine. Has a rack and I use it for biking, skiing, and kayaking. It looks good and handles very well and I can still fit my drumset inside it. Could use more power, but other than that it's a complete package!

Yeah, more power is always the case.. well with me at least. How about mods? They hard to so with this car?

LOVE IT! It's such a fun car to drive, and still looks better than most new cars today, IMO. I'd look into getting a 2002.5 & up as various improvements, such as better looking wheels & tweeters with the stereo were added, but nothing critical.

Only downside is I want to mod, mod, mod......but no $$$!

Good luck.

Hey another Calgary owner, well potentially. I can say this car will carry alot - I just moved and it came in very handy. Search the site as I remember a guy put a full sized washing machine in his 5 no problem. My mountian bike and my wifes fit in nicely.

I see Andy has been here already trying to sell his car LOL. Seriously If I was you I would take a look at it. I have seen this car personally many times and it is very well taken care of. It seems like he is out there washing it every second day or so. You won't be disappointed.

If you have any other questions let us know. There are many of us from Calgary on here. Getting all of us to a meet, now that's a diff story LOL.

I have seen Andy's protege's. You will not go wrong buying that car since (1) the car is in near mint condition (2) Andy is upfront and honest, (2) you'll have the coolest angel eyes fog lights.

Goog Luck getting your P5

He is right about that, that would be one of the benifits of taking a look at my car. I have a pioneer stereo with tweaters, 2003 wheels and a new clutch upgraded to 2003 specs. (wrc)

Thanks for the compliments Mike and Rudy...I will be sad to see this car go as it is the best I have owned (had civic, EL, Jeep, Neon). I may be selling my P5 but I refuse to leave this forum. Too many good people here!

Buy Andy's car man.

Which dealership were you gonna buy from?

Car is very nice. Just needs a bit more power, but hey, everyone wants more power.

Andy, I love your sig!!!

To say it again, if you get one, you won't be sorry. Every vehicle has it's little quirks, but overall, value for the money, superb stock handling (compared to every other econo-slush-box out there), and 'fun to drive' factor - you can't beat it. But yeah, modding is highly addictive (coming from an addict!) Yes, I'm attending weekly meetings... Wait, car meets don't qualify?? :D

To give you an idea... A friend of mine sold his P5 a couple of years ago and bought an STi (bastard), anyhow he's said often that he misses his P5 - it was the most fun-to-drive car he's owned, and he's had a LOT of vehicles.
