The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Star Specs are supposed to be better than the paradas, I don't know whats wrong with that set. Is that the same alignment setting you had on the other P5? I don't know if it was that or your driving but you went through that set pretty quick... I got a really long life out of mine, including auto-x and 1 session at Mid Ohio.

I like my DWs, they've been good on the street and great when its wet. If you want something really grippy, go for the R-S3, they won't last long though, or maybe the S-Drives.

This is for the P5 and I have the Milly for winter/DD. I'm not sold on these Star Specs. I know they were auto-x'ed from teh previous owner Ivan bought them from but the Spec2's were much stickier in the corners. I was thinking of something with a 100 to 200 tread wear again. Something for performance and about $800 max.

There isn't going to be anything below 140 treadwear that isn't an R-compound.

The bees knees for ultra sticky street tires are the Hankook RS-3 and Toyo R1Rs. Take a peek at the results from Nationals going on right now, 90% of the cars are on these two tires with the R1Rs being favored on the lighter cars like Miatas and the Hankooks on heavier cars, particularly of the FWD variety. The Toyos overheat more quickly whereas the Hankooks like heat. Other options in the ultimate grip category are the Kumho Ecsta XS, Bridgestone RE-11, or the Star Specs.

If you take a step down out of the "extreme performance summer" into the "max performance summer" you'll step into a group of tires that a little more tolerant of temperature. This is where the Continental DW is. The DW is fantastic in the rain and cooler temps, but is going to be slower in just about any other condition when compared against the tires in the extreme performance category. If you wanna drop some major coin the Michelin Pilot Super Sports are where it's at in this category reportedly, but they only come in larger sizes and they're expensive.

If you want stickier tires than your current Star Specs and only care about them lasting a season I'd pick up some RS-3s. Plus, they're relatively affordable as far as tires in that category go.

Edit: I forgot about the S-Drives but I just read Pablo's post... They're a nice tire but they're going to fall in the same category as the DWs and not be as good as the RS-3s.
Edit #2: Oh, and the word on the street is there are a couple new hot tires coming for next year. For example the ZII Star Spec is coming for next year ;) and I've heard Bridgestone will have a new tire as well.

That was a great post ^ and sums up everything I've read lately and even what Emilio @ 949racing told me about the R1R vs RS3. I think everyone knows I love the toyo :) I'd love to try the rs3 but the last time I tried switching (to the star spec) I hated the change. It's too bad I don't have any mounted up that you could try, Evan. I haven't driven the continentals in the rain but have only heard amazing things.... And I know how awesome my R1Rs were in the rain (total idgaf it's raining mode--there's even a rain valley run video to prove it :P)

All I have with R1Rs are the 15x9s... In 4x100 :(

Those Falken R615K were awesome tires for the price 200 wear and they were great for autoX too.

Evan if you are looking for a good all around track/ street tire that is good in the wet and dry, checkout the Yokohama Advan Neova A008. That is the tire I am using on the Rx-7 it has good grip and doesn't get greasy unless you over heat them a lot.

well I can retract my former statement about not having 2 sets of wheels. Don't you just hat it when your first offer is accepted? makes you wonder howmuch lower you could've gone

screw it Evan, just get a new set of NITTOS N-1 and scrub em and race em........They are the same compound as the R-1's as Toyo owns Nitto.

Thanks for all the info guys! (Especially Will's long, informative post). Now I have a good starting point for research. :)

17x8 48 offset. Gonna need the hubs bored out but I have until next spring. Might run a 5mm spacer all around

and the bolt on my driver's side motor mount is being a b****.

Happy I could help! Unless you absolutely need tires right now, I'd wait until next year and see what the new hot tire is going to be if you're looking for maximum dry grip.

I forgot about the AD08, that's another good tire. I've ridden in a Miata who was running these last year during an autocross for a couple runs and they gripped very well on a cooler day but they needed heat to get going, similar to the RS-3. Everything I've read has them slightly better in the rain than the RS-3, but not by much. Really, if there's any standing water at all the extreme performance tires aren't any good, similar to R-compounds in that regard.

The Falkens are another good choice and pretty affordable, they were the hot tire a few years ago. They are supposedly like the R1Rs in that they heat up quickly but not a lot of people run them anymore.

I really like those Team Dynamics, Nate. I was thinking about getting a set of those for my Miata for a long time.

anybody know a good place around town to get my bent wheel repaired? i might just buy a new one, they are like $135 each which isn't the end of the world..
