The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

No kidding. I get about 7 or 8 mpg in my '72 Chevelle (454 Big Block). $4/gallon gas is going to hurt. Nice car, I like the white and blue.
This makes me jealous. Is that 454 the same as the LS6 from the '70 SS? That's always been my dream car.

Been spending all my free time pulling apart the RX-7. It's been an interesting and relatively successful weekend so far. Now all I need is an engine stand and hoist so I can actually remove the thing!

It's a rotary... Man up and lift it out.
They're really not all that light - about the same weight as an all-aluminum small block chevy engine. Now if I had the full Racing Beat aluminum 13B then I might be able to just pull it out myself (~100 lbs). Too bad I don't have the money to spend ~$1k per iron to build an engine!

mmmmmmm..... 72 chevelle...... mmmmmmm, my dream car haha been in love with that car since i was like 10-11 years old haha

Thanks Bill. What color is your Chevelle?

It is currently blue with white stripes. Here is a really old page where none of the links work, but you can see thumbnails of it. It isn't in the greatest shape because I did most of the bodywork on it when I was in high school and painted it in my parents garage when I was in college. But its still fun to drive around until I have the garage space to rebuild it. I want to build it into a track day car that will be fun on the street.
The burnout and autocross pictures show how it was through high school and most of college.

My car originally came with a 307 (one of the worst engines GM ever made). The engine I have now is a 78 block with older heads and a circle track cam. Doesn't like to idle very well, so when I get around to doing a rebuild of the car, the engine will get some changes.

Good stuff guys! Loves me some American Muscle.

Here's Kevin's Javelin as it sits now with the new rims/rear suspension setup. He's all hellbent on auto crossing it this year too! Says it handles great for such a big, heavy car....like it's on rails. lol

And you guys saw the '69 Firebird convertible I'm restoring for my dad in my build thread, but here's his '68. They originally bought it for me when I was 14, but by the time I got my license, I was into lowrider trucks, so they just gave me some money for a truck and kept the car. I'm going to buy it once I have the money/the '69 is done. Since it's been in the family so long, and I don't really plan on selling it once it's mine, the wife and I wanted some wedding pics with it. :)

The muscle cars crack me up with the big engines and low hp. My Bavaria when new had a 3.0L and made 180 hp. Look at the new BMW's with the 3.0L's and they're making... 220 ish? Not too far off the mark, I'd say...

That was after '72. The 454 in the '70 Chevelle made 450 HP. But you are right, I know someone with a mid-70's Cadillac. The stock 500 c.i. (8.2L) engine made like 200 HP. That's only 24.4 HP/L!

I forgot how much I like this picture of my car:

I don't know what the horsepower is, but I set up strain guages on the driveshaft for an experimental stress analysis class in college and it was around 450 lb-ft if torque at the engine (back calculated through torque converter and first gear ratio).

Close. The 3.0L makes about 260-270 hp n/a. 300+hp for the boosted one.

Edit: I cheated and called my pops.

Aah yeah. I was comparing against the E46 numbers that I knew off the top of my head. It's amazing that very little conceptually has changed about that engine.

I'll post up my opinions on the bar for you other speed3's. Although it probably won't get tested very well until it freaking stops raining and dries up!!!!

Here's a question for you guys;

What do you call yourself when someone asks if you're a "mechanic"? I mean, I don't work at a shop so I don't consider myself a mechanic, per se. But I do work on my car. A "weekend mechanic"? Just curious. A few strangers have asked me if I'm a mechanic and I say no.
