The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

I'm just saying that for a month this summer I switched from 87 to 93 and noticed a very significant increase in power and fuel economy.

From the butt dyno? Placebo effect man. I've done the switcheroo test several times on my Protege. Mileage per tank never significantly increased.

AJ you said you were using the MSP ECU? Do MSP require 91+ octane fuels like the MS3's? If so, I can see an increase in power/fuel economy over low rent fuel. I would assume that every car is different but if the ECU retards the timing to eliminate knock generated from the 87 fuel this would cause decreased fuel economy and power.

but aj has the mp3 ecu.

then thats why he felt gains, not cause of the gas

an ecu like the mp3 requires a higher grade fuel because of the advanced/higher timing... the reason he was feeling a difference between the 2 grades was cause it was retarding timing to self preserve itself with the 87.... and was running the normal/higher timing with the 93

not that the ecu was magically doing anything other than trying to preserve itself with the lower octane to keep from going boom

I'm not saying your are "blase"...i just hope this information informs some others out there (i'm sure some of you will have kids in the future :))...there are tons of info/research/videos on the web showing the benefits of keeping a child rear facing for as long as possible. And i didn't know all of this with my oldest daughter...she went forward facing at 1yr/20lbs, but i plan on keeping my other daughter rear facing for a long time and both of them in 5-point harnesses for a long time :D

we want this for our oldest :D:

it's helping me out alot! we're going with the rear facing infant seat for a while, hopefully till next x-mas and one of her g-parents will get us the forward facing car seat

No, I mean the MP3 ECU is like the MSP ECU where it wants higher octane. I've heard that the MP3 ECU comes to live with higher octane. I don't know firsthand since I've always ran 93 with my OEM ECU and the MP3 ECU. I should ask Chris if he felt a difference when switching octanes since he has my old MP3 ECU.

^ cause the mp3 ecu was designed to run on premium gas... hence why using a lower grade would retard timing and cause a loss of power and fuel economy

We just stopped using the infant bucket seat and switched to a convertible seat that does rear facing and then switches to front facing...mollie is 16 months :) those are good choices because our 4 yr old is in the same seat, forward facing, and I hope to upgrade soon to the recaro seat I posted

Sorry I got the ECU's mixed up but it sounds like they both behave the same way.

le sigh. What I'm saying is since AJ has the MP3 ECU, which is designed for the higher octane, when he switched to 91 or 93 he would feel a gain. Not a placebo or fake butt dyno.

Just to clarify, I'm typing in a calm demeanor so don't anyone get all bent out of shape or anything. There's a difference between arguing and debating. :)

^ I'm trying to say I agree with that. :)

The lower grade gas is actually causing his engine timing to be retarded :)

^ and im saying the reason he would feel that difference is cause the ecu was designed for 93, and by running some lower grade gas the ecu was retarding itself some to keep anything bad from happening

im not saying the change/feeling/gain couldnt happen, im saying its not a difference in gas, its a difference in the design/engineering of the ecu

we were saying the same thing from different angles Evan... lol

Didn't know he had the MP3 ecu. I should have figured that he did seeing how easy they are to get now with the reflash. That being said, due to the fuel map and ignition timing of the MP3 ecu, there is a potential for detonation with lower octane fuels. The owners manual states that it requires premium, as does the inside of the fuel door. So when the ECU is designed to run a higher octane, yes, performance can degrade, fuel mileage can be affected, and a potentially noticeable difference can be felt.

So essentially what you did was make the car run under it's potential, then bring it back to its actual potential. If you were doing it with a regular Protege ECU, you would not have noticed a difference.

It's helping me!

I need to re-read all this info though, it's getting a little overwhelming. haha

How much is that Recaro?

columbus folks: have you heard of College Car Company? off of north high street...there's a car that i'm interested in, but it looks too good to be true, so just wanted to know if anyone has heard or dealt with them?

thanks!!!

send me a link, I think I have but there's lots of little lots near campus with similar names

i thought i made it clear that i had the mp3 ecu. and i experienced better fuel economy with premium in it, even better than 87 in my oem ecu.

i love that lot, but i've never dealt with them
