The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

ok this s*** is really weird, tonight was the second time it happened, don't know if it's specific to MSMs or other miatas. The car just shuts off... first time I was getting on the on ramp (getting on it, Phen was behind me) and it shut off as I was shifting into second. Pulled over, turned switch off, and it turned back on right away, no more issues. I was driving for a couple of miles before that leaving a restaurant. Tonight, leaving a restaurant, drive for a few miles, get on it on the on ramp, and as I'm coasting in 6th i hear a click and the car shuts off, never lost power, lights remained on. put it in neutral, turn key off, put it in the on position, pop the clutch in 6th and it turns on, no more issues till I got home...

I've heard MSMs have a 'bog' but never something like this... any ideas??

What? There is a flaw in a Miata?! Impossible. The Miata is the most perfect sports car in alllll the land.

But seriously, perhaps a coilpack or something? You didn't get a CEL?

no CEL

lights were still on

lights didn't flash

heard two clicks and the RPM needle went to zero

and I know it's not perfect, just pretty damn fun

Could restaurants have anything to do with it? If I read your post right there were restaurants involved on both occasions. Without a CEL, I would guess that there could be some sort of bad connection, like a ground.

Never happened with mine. Could be an ECU thing. Ask around on Mazda-Speed.com.

Uh huh... Something like that...

i saw that you changed your reply Phen, lol... i was going to say that i'm glad i haven't modded my MSM yet...considering that i have no money to do anything that doesn't help either, lol

It's not the modifications that cause problems to these cars. Like ANY car that's run by electronic wizardry, little finicky issues can arise when a component goes bad. s*** happens to Ferraris too.

yeah...very ture; just about the only thing that i feel comfortable doing wiring wise are stereos and speakers...that's about it.

...i've been zapped too many times to try anything else... :(

I'll tackle anything, the thing I hate is that wiring/electrical issues are the biggest PITA to diagnose.

Wiring and electrical doesn't bother me too much. Actually, I should say that it didn't bother me... until my good multimeter went POOF. I've been too cheap to buy the Fluke that I want. My oscilloscope helped a bit when messing with the dwell on my buddy's '72 BMW 2002tii a few years back. I really haven't had much of an opportunity to mess with crap like that any more.

I have a $20 mulitmeter and it works well enough to figure out what I want. I haven't used an oscilloscope since I was in college.
