The Manual-Automatic Protege5

Sorry we do tend to get off topic here sometimes. And the button I was talking about turbo, was the little covered one for undoing the locking mechanism. I am unaware of any sport automatic that has a button on the actual shifter to get it out of park. Typical automatics will have that trigger style button though, but the sportmatics didn't cause they wanted the handle to have more of a manual feel.

This button I'm referring to is the one that resides on the upper right with a cover. ALL newer cars have a feature to keep you from getting it out of park without pushing the brake first. And normal automatics tend to have a extra button on the shifter that needs to be pushed to. Since the sport automatics do not have the trigger on the shifter they incorporated a emergency override button. This way in case the shifter won't get out of park with the brake press you can push this with a pen and then get the shifter out. This this will happen is when the tranny detects a fault and goes into safe mode, which also locks it into 3rd.

btw how long did this take?

i dont have the sport matic (and hopefully not even the normal auto much longer) I did not know about the one on the side not being there on the sports. I now know, thank you.

I guess by me getting the old tranny, i get the old idea's too. o well.

looks good, although now it looks like a manual that is in serious need of a short shifter

I have already tried to find one. Or tried to find something else I could use at least.

looks nice except i hate how high it goes, im planning the same thing except im gonna take a hacksaw to it and either rethread it or use a shifter with set screws, automatic short shifter :)

See that is what I wanted to do originally, but I have been having so many problems with my car that we never really thought we would keep it. So everything I have done to my car has been pretty conservative. A couple cheap panels here and there have been ripped up, but anything majorly mechanical I didnt want to pay to replace. If we decide to keep this one, I promise you that will be the first thing I do. I like how it looks and all but everyone is right, it is WAY TOO HIGH!

I plan on taking a hacksaw to that damn truck shifter they threw in our cars. I just need to wait till after the holidays. I wouldn't worry about your warranty cause shortening the gear selector does nothing as far as wear and tear on the tranny or any of its components.

GGK, how did you secure the base of the boot to the console? Is it under the shift plate? Duct taped? Huh huh huh?

Looks good, btw. I've been considering this for some time, but was too lazy to do it.....

The Ichibahn shift boot I bought had an elastic hem at the bottom of the boot so I was able to spread it over the existing shift plate piece and then sandwich it down with the shift console piece. And that was about all it took. I did have to remove the little black trim piece in the shift console piece to allow proper clearance for the thick shift boot material.

Why, be proud of owning an automatic. Honestly, this falls under the 'poser' catagory.

I though manual shift knobs don't fit on the autostick thing. looks like I'm gonna go out and get a shift knob now cause I hate that long handle thats on there right now. Did you have to do anything to put the shift knob on that was custom work?

Hey GGK, how exactly does the shift plate come off? Was going to do this yesterday, but decided to wait until I got the plate off in one piece.

Thanks for the tip, L8R. Figured that's all it was, just didn't want to break anything by using an extreme show of brute force. Guess I know what I'm doing Saturday..........Well, that and re-wiring my side markers.
