what does that have to do with OD, nothing...
True. If I am not mistaken OD is for when you're climbing up a hill so that you stay in gear longer so taht the transmission doens't always have to shift up and down. And since you have tiptronic, you can just put it in tiptronic mode so you transmission wont' be shifting up and down all the time (while climbing the hill).

From waht I remember, that is basically the use of the OD. However, I dont' really remember why the automatic transmission will shift up and down in short intervals when you're climbing a hill.

Another use of the OD that I can think of, is to downshift :)

Hehe, noobs, ;) :p

Did mine, reg. auto, a long while ago. Oh yeah, flames, whatever...(jerkit)

o my god are you guys that uneducated in what OD is?

OD - Over Drive

Its the tallest gear in which the motor is actually turning slower than the tires. It gives you the most amount of fuel economy, but you have the least amount of power / torque.

You have a button to turn it off when you are constantly climbing and decending hills, or towing for example. The tranny will be constantly trying to get into the highest gear possible (OD) to achieve the best fuel economy, but then need more torque/horsepower to go up a hill etc. Resulting in a ton of upshifting and downshifting, which is needlessly wearing pit your tranny.

Its very simple.

And for the guy saying that you should never have to push the button to get your car out of park, or into any gear for that matter, i believe everyone including me was talking about the crome button that you have to push, while you push the brake pedal to get any auto transmission in the world to move. Some have it on the top, or the front of the lever. ours on the side. Older GM's etc you had to pull the steering column mounted shifter forward then into each gear.

I was unaware that our cars had the little "emergency override" I thought that was pretty much a honda/acura thing.
You'd stick your key into it, then you could move the shifter with the car off.

My 2 cents

the button only applies to the early 02 p5s...everything else (02.5 and up) have the sportronic tranny, which doesnt have any buttons to press to shift it out of park...all u need to do is step on the brake and it will let you shift...as for the "emergency override," to my knowledge, its the little hole on the bottom of the shift plate that u stick a screwdriver into...

lol trbomp5, i was going to try to explain to the uninformed, but i didn't feel like typing much, thanks 2 u!

i hate to type too, and that took me forever to type, but it was just getting annoying and somebody had to say something.

Ok, wow, didnt intend for this to become the like local heated discussion. I was just trying to be retarded and show off my gimp automatic shift knob that I worked up a little bit.

All I know is, there are no buttons on my shifter, thus I got away with not needing a shifter with buttons. Sorry all you other P5's that do.

when I see cars with this done I think the guy is a dumbass for parking in 3rd gear. then I realize it must be an automatic and I call him a poseur

Ouch. Point well taken. I do wish I had gotten a manual instead, but this is the one they had on the lot wanting to bargain down. So I took it. Plus I had to get rid of that gimp large ass factory shift knob so I could put my screen there.

It may not be manual, but it's my automatic and i am gonna rock it till it dies.

don't get me wrong if I had an auto I would do the same thing :D

whenever I see a nice car parked somewhere I check what kind of gearbox it is to determine if it's any good (stash)

I do the same thing with high-dollar imports and stuff and kick myself when I see them with an automatic in them. My next car will be manual. My project Miata actually is going to be a manual with a turbo so I am excited when it gets driveable.

well anyways, what kind of shift boot is that? i was interested in doing this (today, actually) and was wondering if all boots would fit. would it really matter?

I dont really think it matters which boot. I got an Ichibahn Universal boot from work (Circuit City) and a brushed Ichibahn shift knob from Circuit as well as few weeks ago.

thanks, i saw a nice black boot as well. how much did it cost you? because i think my local circuit city stopped carrying auto parts, and the jobber price there is kinda high. just wondering.

I paid 12$ for my boot and 9$ for my shift knob. So it was pretty cheap. If your Circuit City quit carrying those parts then you can find pretty decent ones at either Best Buys or AutoZone/Pepboys.

yeah, i was gonna get one that looked like yours with the sex bolt-looking things on top, except that it was black. saw it at pep boys today while buying antifreeze but hesitated to actually buy it.
