Terrible Engine Noise

Yeah, I have warranty.......... The noise is coming from the back part of the engine, on top, like where the headers connect to the engine........ where all those wires are......... what was i supposed to look for on the sensor........ well I may be looking at the wrong sensor, its like a "U" shaped (but flat on bottom) metal thing.... to the far left of the head....?

that noise you hear "tick, tick tick" after you shut the engine off, sounds like it might be the exhaust system/components cooling down. i get that too! i'm sure it nothing to be concerned about. joe

im pretty sure that post was for matttrix, but if not, I get the ticking all the time.... not just after shutting the car off.....

The ticking noise you guys are talking about is normal....it's just vavle tick. One of the main reasons we have it is because of the design of the valve actuators. instead of rocker arms and push rods we have "clearance" caps that directly link the top of the valve spring to the cam lobe. the other reason is because mazda uses extremely small drain back / fill holes in the lifters. some cars are more noisey than others. it won't hurt anything unless you notice oil consumption or degraded performace. easiest way to tell is take the valve cover off and check the cam lobes and and valve caps for signs of heat or cracking. if you see alot of either one then you need some work, otherwise just try to tune it out.

tune it out...? And what would signs of heating look like????

by tune it out, i meant as in try to ignore it. excessive heating will cause a bluish/purple color on the cam lobes and caps. some heating is normal just from friction, nothing's 100% effcient, but a good portion of the lobe or the whole thing should not be blue/purple. if it's just very light and the majority of the lobe still looks sliverish then it is fine. cracks are pretty easy to spot, if you're really worried about cracks use some leak dye and run the engine for a few minutes, then use a black light over the valve train, most of it'll glow at that point just makes creaves easier to spot.
