Could someone explain to me exactly what a synchro is, what it does, and how it does it for a manual transmission? I understand most of how the clutch works when swithcing gears, but don't understand what role the synchros play. And why do some gears have more synchros than others, why would you need more than one? Instead of having three synchros for a gear, couldn't you make one really good one? I think I read somewhere that our trannies have no synchro in reverse which is what causes it to be a PITA to get into sometimes. What up with that?
