Sue Mazda?

The VICS are the ones causing the problems. The pic above is also a vics type system. And yes, the vibration loosens the screws and they fall out.

As for what the VICS does, read up a few posts.

It has been confirmed...this is the same problem i just experienced yesterday. They replaced the manifold for me. is there anything else that they should have replaced?

"practically all"... but what about the ones made in hiroshima like mine? I thought I was free and clear :'(

holly s*** man! Now I dont know what to say. Before when this problem was hunting the Protege Sedans, all the sedans came from Tofu plant, and not Hiroshima. Are you sure yours came from Hiroshima? Thats just redicilous regarding this problem. Whether or not it will hurt the manufacturer's wallet, THEY WILL have to make a recall, if we will get ALL people on these and other forums who have same problem and write a petition to them.

Is the car still at the dealer? If so, ask them to look into the head walls and see if they are scratched (as mine were).....dealer has the snake-like camera to look into tight spots.

I already picked up the car....is it bad to have the heads scratched?

Doubtful. Probably just put out a tsb for whenever the screws fall out. Cheaper that way, and less press.

Oh no dont worry man, I was asking him why he said all proteges are effected while you said those from hiroshima weren't... I haven't had any problem with mine but was worried until I heard hiroshima ones should be ok, then he says it applies to nearly all proteges and I get worried again! (confused)

nobody knows of a how-to on removing the intake manifold? Just checking in. Thanks in advance to any who can help me out.

I'm 99% sure mine was built in hiroshima

Basics of removing the manifold:

Remove the strut tower bar, and the vacuum lines going into the manifold and all the electrical connectors from the injectors and other sensors.. There are 2 coolant lines going into the throttle-body that must be removed and stopped-up. Then remove the throttle wire.

To remove the fuel rail, undo the bolts that hold it on and gently pull up and back. The injectors will slide out of their positions and you can then place the fuel rail onto the engine. You do not have to remove the fuel line so don't or you will just make a mess. The hardest part to remove is the EGR nut. Hit it with some liquid-wrench and then I used 90-degree channel-locks to remove the nut from the throttle-body. It's a b**** but it will come off.

There are 7 bolts/nuts to remove the mani from the engine on top. Under the car there are two more bolts that hold it to a black bracket. On the passenger side there is a butterfly actuator that can be disconnected from the actuating bar by taking-off a small ring-clip with needle-nose pliers. Slide the manifold back and off.

After the mani is off you can seperate the halves by removing the bolts/nuts. One is under a bracket on top of the mani in the rear-center. Just take the bracket off to make life easier and hand tighten it on after. I am going to do an official write-up when I get mine back if there is intrest. Good luck.

I remember seeing it either on my door stamp or on the window sticker, can't recall which

Mazdamia - thanks for the quick how-to, more informative than anything i've found yet. I'll look for your official write-up in the how-to section if you're still gonna write it. Thanks.

My injectors and fuel rail were not replaced. they only changed the manifold and regapped one of my spark plugs. should i be worried?
did they do a half assed job?
can some one tell me the path of the screw?

Dealers (or rather Mazda N/A) won't approve replacing everything just because they "should". They will replace only what's necessary to repair the problem.

Id' only worry about it if the problem resurrects itself agian.
