Stock Rims with 205/55/R16's

Hi good people of the forums.
I'm in a real bind here. As many have experienced, I'm having a very difficult time locating snow tires for my Protege 5. I'm using the stock 195/50/R16's right now on the same rims.

I ask you... can I use 205/55/R16's on the stock rims? I realize that this will throw my speedometer off a little, but there seems to be a plethora of this tire available locally, where as I am having a crazy time trying to find a reasonably priced 195...

Cost is an issue, so it's important that I can use my stock rims and not have to invest in newer rims.

Your thoughts on this are greatly appreciated.

should be no problem and will fill in the wheel gap a little if you are not dropped!!!!!!

Thanks for the quick reply!

The car is stock everything...and hasn't been dropped at all. It's funny, every time I call a shop about the 195/50/R16's they laugh... and tell me that size is very difficult to find. Like I need a reminder! (eek2)

I've got an early start tomorrow to get these 205/55/R16's mounted on those stock rims. Hopefully things go smoothly...

Thank god for these forums and the great help!

Your speedometer will read 5% lower. So if the speedometer reads 60mph, you'll actually be traveling 63mph. That's assuming the speedometer is accurate. Given that most speedometers read a little higher than normal, the larger tire might even correct the error in the speedometer.

I bought 205/50 -16 snows from Tirerack.com for the stock rims a few weeks back and they fit fine. My car is lowered as well. Oddly enough, they told me that customers who bought 195/55-16's reported rubbing on the struts and didn't want me to order that size.

ya, its hard to find these tires i got my snow tire from dealership for $84 a piece. Hankook Icebear.

So I ended up with a set of winter Hankook's - 205/55/R16. They ride a little more comfortably than the old tires that I had on the car. I found them for $78 a tire... so overall I'm happy with the days events.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Biggest snow tires i've seen on a P5, is in a parking lot near where I live. I looked at the car from far away and noticed that he's not dropped but still, tires are way in the fenders..

I read on the tire, 205/65/15...I know yes it's not the OEM wheel...but hey, it's some freaking big tires!!!

I'm sure it rubbed everywhere...
