steering column noise?

:
2002 Yellow P5
I'm getting a noise when I turn my wheels. Almost a creaking/groaning noise. It almost sounds like it's coming from the steering column inside the car. I notice it more when the car has sat in the sun and been able to soak up some heat. I don't hear it at speed, but there are all kinds of other noises then. I know I have a lot of miles at 223,000 but I do want to keep the boy around.

this is going to sound weird but mine was just going it and i was messing with it for ever and it trued up to be the latch that moves the steering wheel up and down was not pushed in all the way

worth a try

Heh, I don't want to be insulting. But it may be your wheels turning on the ground. (chair)

But my car's revs shoot up to 1k whenever I turn the wheel while parked. Is this normal?

Have you ever had any front suspension components replaced? If not, your endlinks may finally be on the way out, or it may be another rubber bushing somewhere in that general area.

To SocialStealth, your revs shooting up when you turn your wheel is just the power steering system engaging. Totally normal.

I've replaced the sway bar links probably 3-4 times since owning it. I haven't checked them lately but the times before the sound was a little different.

A year later now since your original post ...have you figured out what this was ? I am having exactly the same symptoms: a creaking noise when I turn the steering rack area (seems like) when stationary or in motion - as if it was rubber on rubber. Everything seems to be working fine, but just want to know whether this is something to be concerned about.

It did end up being the endlinks for the sway bar. I had replaced them not long before that. I went through everything thinking it couldnt' be them but sure enough I swapped one side out and it went away. The sound appeared to be coming from the strut tower but it must have been deceiving.

The Colonel is gone now so I have nothing more on it.

Score 1 for me (stash) Glad you got it figured out.
