i was getting ready to start up my p5 out of a parking lot this evening...i turned the key and all the electronics started up, the gauge lit up, but no cranking of the starter...i sit for a bit and try it again...nothing...i then released the hand brake just to see what would happen, and it started up like normal...this is an auto p5 btw...would there be any mechanism installed that caused my car to act like that?...that was the first time that it happened, but i just want to kno what may have caused the car to do that...

K...hypothetical. Could the starter have been locked up. When you released the parking brake it moved the car enough to unlock the starter since it is connected to the flywheel. Ya know the starter was forced to move by the flywheel. But does the flywheel even move whith the axles? Again, this is only hypothetical.

I've started the car several times w/the parking brake on. No lockup whatsoever. So yeah maybe a little movement helped. But that tells me maybe you have some bad connections w/the starter or something???

Just thought of something we do have factory alarms on these cars. So, maybe you activated the factory starter disable.

nope, made sure that the alarm was off...just hit the unlock button a few times to make sure that it wasn't the starter disable...

Which unlock? the remote or the button in the door. The one on the remote is the one that operates the anti theft. I think the key in the door does it too.

i hit the one on the remote and the door...ive actually set off my alarm a few times by hitting the lock button in the door and trying to start the car up that way...i figured that it was the same thing, but all my doors were unlocked and the alarm was disarmed...still no clue what happened...

Hmmm, I ahve an auto/stick P5, and my driveway is kind of at a slant, so I always engage the emergency brake when parking.
The car always starts with it engaged without a problem. I do this on nearly a daily basis, never had any kind of problem.
Weird...:-\

The same thing happened to me once, then two days later my vehicle would not start at all, I have had it towed to the dealer and trying to diagnose what's gone wrong. I tried to jump it off of another vehicle but that didn't work.... I suspect a faulty starter, or bad (clutch relay switch) The vehicle would not crank at all....

he means the sport-shift automatic. 2002.5 and up came with an automatic that you could tap-shift sequentially between 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears.
