I'm saving up for the same. Springs would be cheaper and more economical, but you lose the adjustibility of coil overs. Also after market springs will probably wear your shocks out faster, and kill em eventually. Coilover kits thought costs much more, are a better choice since they come with balanced springs and struts, and are also adjustable. Mazdaspeedgirl mentioned ground controls. From what I've researched, gc coilover kits don't come with shocks, so your stock ones will probably get killed by the gc. So if you do get the gc I suggest getting some better shocks too, like tokico illuminas or hp. Either way, be ready to spend from $700 - $1000 for a quality setup that will last.
I had skunk2 coilovers, didn't want to spend $1100 on good setup, and hated the ride. I rode with them all the way down all the time. Adjustability is not such a big advantage, was very hard and usually had to clean the sleeve before the rings would even turn. Riding at a 2" drop is about all you can do before the ride is horrible. I am lowered 2" with springs and the handling is awesome. The springs do not pop and squeak like coilovers either. I have heard from some folks that the G.C. ride better than skunk2, but I have heard the opposite from others. Strictly up to you in the end, just something to think about. Really depends though on how low you want to go
I have the eibach ground controls, and when i had them at there lowest point the ride was horrible But it was hard making it up ramps or even over speed bumps......one time i couldnt even make it down a ramp, it caught the middle of the frame and the car stopped! Anywayz, i picked it up and the ride is alot better.....its still very low but it absorbs the bumps alot more. I used to have the Eibach Pro kit, but sometimes i would want it lower.
either get real springs or real coilovers, its up to you, i have eibach prokits and will be getting JIC's as soon as i have the money, it was not satisfied with the performance from the springs. if you want looks get springs but i would say stay away from the adjustable ones and they will kill your stock struts fast) if you want performance save up and get REAL coilovers
