** Spring Buyer's Guide **

If you look at the very 1st post --- you will see what the dx-- ect.... is then next is the MS ---- which is not much, but enough to give great satisfaction, just like protegeric said :)

There are way too many pages here to sift through them all so if someone could quickly answer my question, I would greatly appreciate it.

What are the stock spring rates for the P5? Are they the same as the DX/LX/ES Protege's? I know they definitely aren't the MSP or MP3 springs but at the same time I thought they were different than the regular sedans.

I ask because I'm trying to find the best setup spring rate-wise and I would like something for comparison. My car is daily driven and I don't want something crazy like 150% stiffer than stock springs.

u want the best setup for daily driving and takin some highway on/off ramps, twisties, etc.? just go with the stock MAZDASPEED Protege setup. hands down the best. u can find racing beat springs on the forum for around $75 or so and just get some blues (or upgrade with illuminas). but the stock MPS setup kicks ass big time.
+1. I've got MSP springs w/ illuminas. It rides pretty nice. I could make it a bit softer by taking a little out of the struts, but I do enjoy the handling :D

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'll keep my eyes peeled for some stock MSP springs. I will be ok buying them used, right? I guess I'm asking if they have any tendency to sag after a certain number of miles.

I was half expecting for people to say Blues/Eibach Pro-Kit is the best so this comes as a bit of a surprise.

After some trial and error with Goldlines on my Illuminas, I agree. I'm going back to the stock RB springs. I just need to trim the stock fronts about 3/4" to get the perfect compromise between killer ride height and the handling our cars were designed for. It's easy to f-up the handling by overlowering the MSP. This coming from my recent experience, my reading on CG vs. Roll Center (called the Roll Couple) and a conversation with a Tokico engineer who helped do the testing on the MSP suspension.

See above. For future reference, the Tokico engineer I spoke with said the stock blues are the equivalent to a 1.5 (or one and a half clicks) vs. the Illuminas. Too bad the Illumina doesn't have that setting, lol. That was a huge tidbit to have when trying to split hairs and compare between them though.

i repsonded in the other thread, but ill go ahead and reply here too. the megans are pretty stiff. if you do get them, i would suggest at the least, hp's (not msp struts), but preferably illuminas. you will wear out the stock struts insanely fast if you install the springs on them.

you dont quite get a 2 inch drop, more like and inch and a half. but they are wonderful springs, and i loove auto-xing my car with them.

^^^I wish I could find some Tokico struts. The cheepest I have seen them new is $320 shipped. Are there any springs that you can run with the stock struts???

best choice might be the msp racing beats. not that much stiffer than the stock springs, but you will notice increased strut wear with stiffer springs

i just read that the spring rates for the evotion are 245lbs/in F and 171lbs/in R.

in other words, harder than the s. tech(and just about everything else), or do i have a misunderstanding of the rate formula?

It was on toronto protege forum. some guy was doing a group buy on em. u can usually find them on ebay for like 30 bux. :- l

i have a set of em.
