speeding ticket help?

i just got a speeding ticket for going 86 in a 70 mph zone. does anyone know anything about this ticket or how to get out of it? the state trooper would not tell me any info ("you'll have to go to court"). i am in north carolina and i know every state is differant.

i heard that you could get off if you got tested for faulty equipment. has anyone had their speedometer checked? i do not think that i was going that fast. could the 17" rims throw off the speedometer? is there any proof that the state trooper did not add a couple (a print out of the recorded speed)? How much is a lawyer for something like this?

thanks for the feed back. i am just trying to figure some things out.

it will probably cost a little less if you hire a lawyer, but id rather give my money to a lawyer than the state...all the lawyer does is drag the trial out really long, you dont even have to go to court.

I always just hire a lawyer. Normally runs you about $60-70.
It's just going to cost you more money to try and prove faulty equipment, and you still may have to pay a fine!

Or..you can just plead no contest, no points, and pay a court fee. Depending on the state, you may have to go to traffic school.

17s will throw off the speedometer, you will be going slightly faster than it reads since it thinks you have 16s on. i have no clue how to calculate it.

Is this your first offense? You can try to get it deferred and take traffic school. What happens is you have to stay clean for a certain amount of time, around 6 months, and then its wiped clean off your record.

If you don't, it comes back, and the new one as well. So I would try to get it deferred. Good chance if its your first offense, but i 've heard of friends getting it deferred on 4 and 5 time.

I personally would not even bother go to court. As SilentSno said, if it's your first offense, take the traffic school and becareful in the following 6 months. After 6 months w/o any new speeding tickets, your record will be whipe out.

Also, traffic school is a piece of cake now. Most of DMW allow you to take traffic school nowadays w/o realizing how easy it is to pass it. I took my traffic school at http://www.trafficschool.com/; I took the first 2 sections, took a nap, then went back to finish it . Yet, I didn't remember a thing I read.

i had a post about this b4, do a search and theres some helpful info. I went to court, sat there for 3hrs. and i was going 21 over the limit. they reduced it to 14 over but i still had the same ticket cost, just less points.

You can also ask for the calibration settings on the gun and the officers certification. These are two pieces of info which are important in planning you defense. It's also more paperwork for the officer. Get your court date and then about a month before the date let the police department you want this information. If it's not given to you before the court date you get off.

thanks guys. there is a lot of useful info here. i am going to do a search like paulmp3 said. i guess you really cant get away with too much in a vivid yellow mp3.

mp3_moran that sounds like a good idea that is at least worth a shot. i want to make it as tough as i can for the trooper that got me. thanks again.

I don't know about NC, but at least here in NJ/NY/CT area, if you've got points (moving violations, accidents) it will STAY ON YOUR INSURANCE record for 40 months. That means that if you plead guilty and you get those points, you will be paying through the nose for insurance the next 3.5 years, esp. if you're a young one.

Get a lawyer and fight it, it's cheaper in the long run. Most of the people I know fight it out in court.

*** Edit ***
Or try to cut a deal with the DA and pay the same fine, but plea guilty to a non-moving violation - that way you don't get those points on your record.

thanks. this is my first ticket. i am 22 years old. i think that it would be cheaper in the long run to get a lawyer and not have to pay for the hike in insurance. is this right?

the 17 will not affect the speedo calibration unless you change the roll out will bigger tires as well 17=less rubber 16=more rubber

I'd check what the insurance regulations are in your state on how long points stay on your record. Call your insurance agent and ask how long points stay on (if that's how its done in North Carolina) and see if they'll even tell you how much your premium will go up if you get ponits.

Also, how did the cop get you? Radartrap? Lidar? Pacing? Moving Radar? Were you in the middle of a group of cars, the lead or the tail end? Write down as much detail before you forget, like time, place, other cars around you, etc.

What about the ticket itself? Is the day and time correct? is the license plate no. that the cop wrote out correct? etc...

I got a moving citation for not "fully" stopping on the stop sign. I live in CAli. Got a little paper in the mail that cop sent out some stuff. I haven't received it yet. But it was on the 1st of the april so i still have almost 2 weeks. The cop made a mistake in my name?

What should i do? This is my first citation. Should i plead guilty or not?

thanks guys.
