I have 35 000 km's on my car. When should I change my spark plugs? anyone know.... or has anyone done so lately?

you should change your spark plugs every 15,000 miles or so. also make sure you use ngk plugs otherwise your car runs kinda messed up! hope this helped!

Every 15K miles???? are you SURE? What about wires?

I installed a set of Platinum Bosch 2's and have not experienced any probs... I don't see why you haveto stick with the NGK's. What's been your experience Kooldino?

NGK plugs should be used on our cars. You will not see any performance gains what so ever by running plat's don't know about iridium though. I was explained by a few mechanics that a car designed to run copper doesn't necessarily have the support for plat's. I was told they require slightly more power to fire off the plats... dunno if it's true or not... never tested or done research on it. I was only told that you gain nothing from running platinums so why spend extra $$ on it.....

Well. like everything else that is "heard", I haven't heard that they're bad or otherwise for that matter. Until we see some proof, it doesn't matter what we heard. But I certainly don't think that it will hurt our cars to run platinums... I think Bosch would be silly and quite at risk for liability (can you say law suit?), if they sold a product that could hurt our cars.
Hell, consider my car the test... I haven't had any problems. I'll even pull em out in a month and see what they look like for the sake of science.

but marlboro can sell something that hurts people.... why not bosch to our cars....

Sorry, but it sounds like the mechanic who told you to only run NGK, is an idiot, especially if he said you will see no performance or horse power gain, but in the performance forum they have the dyno sheets from a company who is gettting roughly 5 horsepower from plugs, and maybe wires, and guess what there not NGK.

Plats are ok for our cars, but they dont give performance gains. There is a danger (expressed on another thread here) that platinums do not work with F/I or high compression cars. Corky Bell discourages use of plats with those types, they run too cold.

Just jumping in to your conversation.:)

Well first off the mechanic is my uncle... I will sure to mention what you think of him... secondly making statements such as....

from a company??? and words as "maybe" shows how much certainty this statement or dyno sheet truly is. You show no other mods on the car. Do you truly believe everything that is on the internet... simply cause someone posts it doesn't mean it's real... and if you are the type of guy that does.... maybe you should invest in one these....

I mean $0.99 for 20 HP    Before you start insulting others make sure you have facts behind it instead of just ranting on about maybe's and possibilities.....

Check out this link:
platinum plug facts

and note this quote, BTW:
One thing to keep in mind about all "performance" spark plug designs is that no plug can magically create horsepower out of thin air or add horsepower that wasn't there in the first place. But improved ignition reliability can minimize horsepower losses caused by misfires. That's why some plug manufacturers claim their spark plugs improve power. The gains come from power that was being lost to misfires.

With regards to wires, remember it's not wire diameter that counts, but effective insulation.

Just thought I'd spread some info.

Platinum plugs are fine to run in our cars...yes they do run slightly cooler than standard copper plugs just because of the inuslating properties of the core. If you have a high discharge ignition like Jacobs or MSD, which doesn't work on our cars to begin with, you can't run platinum plugs because of the resistance of the material. The only reason the mechanic probably recommended NGK's is two fold..one they come stock on almost all japense cars, and two they're damn good plugs. Personally i used to run Bosh platinum +4's in my miata untill I installed an MSD DIS2 setup and they ran fine around 30K miles and showed minimal wear versus about 20K on standard copper plugs. Sorry for the long post but it's one of those 6 of one half dozen of the other situations that can go on forever.

I'm still running stock plugs/wires. However, I hear bad things about platinum plugs for cars like ours...they last longer, but they'll rob power. NGK is the best plug for the $.

Wow, I skipped this topic for a long time. I didn't know plugs were under so much of a debate. Why not just cut to the chase and buy an aftermarket ignition system thus enabling you to adjust a tune your ignition setup. I figure this will give you the ability to tune with what every plugs you use. Sure it may cost $300 for an MSD, but you'll be needing it if you plan on turboing you car anyway.

MSD igition

Apexi, the MSD won't work on the 2.0L. I can't remember the thread name right off, but it's been discussed and someone had called MSD to clarify whether or not the DIS system would work with our stock igition and MSD stated that because of the high resistance coil packs that Mazda's using on our cars that the DIS would not work. If I can dig it up and someone wants to try it just for s**** and giggles I've got an old MSD DIS2 box that someone can have. Personally I'm not going to use it on anything so it's not doing me any good.
