Rust - is this normal?

Update: They are going to fix it!! They are fixing where it bubbled between the rear fender and the bumper, and are going to look at the place where the paint all chipped off and there's bad surface rust from the sideskirts moving since it's the OEM sideskirts.

I have to be without my car until the end of the week o_o

ottawaP5: That is the exact kind of rust I took my car in for. It was denied warranty because they claimed that it was caused by a stone chip. I didn't feel like wasting my breath and arguing it so I went and bought the window guide for $15 and I'll install it myself.

I'll see if they give me the same arguement on Monday.....If they only cost $15 and are easy to install, I'll do the same as you did.

For anyone who has rust like mine.. they will fix the surface rust where the tight sideskirt chips the paint off. The body shop even suggested putting a rubber gasket in, which they did at no cost to me and it's really not noticeable unless your face is within an inch or two of the sideskirt. The body shop did a great job painting the stuff, but they got all kinds of overspray all up in my wheelwells and on my rear suspension. Too bad I have to go back to school so I don't have time to deal with the body shop :(

My car is a rust bucket no more, I need to update my sig.

Was it hard to replace?

Also, was the paint on the new one different from the one thats been exposed to UV rays for a few years?

Cheers,

Wow...they better warranty my rust or i'll be pissed.

i had the same bubbling problem on the rear fender lip and they wouldnt warranty it so i traded it in for an rx-8.

wow, i've learned alot about rust... I have the same rust problems.. on the windows, and around the P5 logo. Theres no stone chips.. i've had it looked at by 3 different body shops and they all agreed it wasnt from stones. I didnt realize that i could try warrenty. Maybe i should now that i know other people have the same places too.. hmm...

No, replacing the guide was pretty easy. The tricky part was getting it out since the weather stripping was still on. But it took only about a half hour.

The guide was the same colour as the old one. There was nothing that indicated it was worn from UV.

I just found some rust developing on the black trim between the rear window and the triangular stationary window. Anyone else? I didn't read all the posts.

Is this covered? I got the rust proofing done thru the dealership. Haven't called them yet (Erin Mills.....hate dealing with them!)

Rust is a very tricky issue to get warranty on. It all depends on where it is. Most of the time the dealer will tell you that the rust spot was caused by a stone chip or something to that extent. Of course if the rust is inside your trunk, then you could tell them to go suck an egg if they told you it was a stone chip or something.

I just went in for rust on my rear driver's window guide. It is definitely a bubble from underneath. I was of course told that it was a paint chip and that the labour to fix it would be approx. $90 Cdn. So I called the parts guy and asked how much a rear window guide was. $15 Cdn he tells me. I ordered it (just waiting for it to come in), and I'm just going to change it myself. I figured it wasn't worth the hassle to argue with them. Plus, last time I had my car in they gouged the crap out of my rear skirt and chipped the hood with what looks like something that was caused by dropping an air wrench.

Anyway, good luck with the rust. Like I said it's tough to argue no matter right you know you are.
Just saw this. This might help me. Thanks.

BTW........I take REALLY good care of this thing. 120,000 KM and other than a few stone chips on the front, it's mint. So they can't feed me any lines.....

Stormtrooper, what excatly did you have to do? Did you take apart the door panel from the inside?

I'm over the 3yr/80,000, so Erin Mills won't fix it. Bastards.

The only way to prevent rust in the fenders is to get it oil sprayed once a year. I was told by the rustproffing place that Mazda's are particularly bad for rust.
My 1995 Mazda 323 (which I should have never traded in for the P5!!!) had 280,000 and not a speck of rust. They don't make em like they used to!

But rust is covered for 5 years unlimited mileage, at least here in the U.S.

I think that's for rust PERFORATION. In other words, a friggin hole in your body! Not surface rust.

Oh ok ... they covered my rust because I had bubbling paint so it was coming through from the inside. They just happened to fix the other two rust places that were just surface rust from the sideskirts chipping off paint.

i have a small bubble on the rear window divider also, wtf...
I noticed one side is better due to there being some trim cut away to allow the water to run down. But the driver side, the trim is snug, and the bubbling is bad.

Makes ya wonder why they killed this model after only 2 years. Hmm...

I've checked other cars i.e. Toyota, Honda, Acura with similar age or actually much older and there's absolutely no rust. These are cars from similar weather conditions than my car is.
...I've decided to return the car after end of lease in few months.

updates?

Hey, I'm looking for any updates

Did anyone have their rust removed?

Is the rust worse and still forming in the wheel wells and other places??
