Rollin Resonatorless!

Rollin Resonatorless(intake)!

So just for the fun of it, I took off that monstrosity mazda calls a resonator. Its great! I should probably put in a nicer air filter, but thats later. It sounds really good. There is a much deeper throatier sound from the engine now, and you can hear the sucking noise occasionally. Now, the only reason I dont just get a cold air intake is because I am going turbo eventually and dont want to spend the 200 or so bucks just to inevitably sell it. But anyway id have to say to anyone thinking about buying a short ram from some company, dont waste your money. Just take off your resonator and drop in some nicer better flowing air filter. I dont see how you could gain much more HP from a manufactured short ram over just removing the crap.

EDIT: ITS NOT AN EXHAUST RESONATOR.. IT"S NOT A RESONATOR.. ITS A BUNCH OF PLASTIC THAT SITS OVER THE RADIATOR THATS CONNECTED TO THE AIRBOX THAT COLLECTS HOT AIR.

No I just took off the two plastic pieces that go over the radiator and the part that goes down to the lower bumper. So basically everything from the filter box and back I left on. I didnt replace it with anything. It's just that now there isnt a big ass bunch of plastic crap absorbing heat and wasting space. The only thing that isnt too cool is that there is a circular opening where the two parts met up. But I dont see it being much of a problem as the filter is still intact and its way too high up to get anything really hazardous in it. Wish i had a digitial camera .. I'd go out and take a picture really quick. sorry.:(

Ohh..thought you meant exhaust resonator....
Anyone removed the exhaust resonator while we are on the topic (sort of)

I dont see how you could gain much more HP from a manufactured short ram over just removing the crap.

Well it is not just removing it.

1. It is bigger pipe size.
2. It also helps stop bending. ex: rubber hose flexes and changes pipe size and flow. Which the metal pipe doesnt and helps keep universal flow.

Well you could aslo by a good short ram for cheap and then buy a mandrel bent pipe of the same diameter cut the angle you need and have a cold air also.

Also for testing before I changed my short ram to a cold air. I drove around with my snap-on mt2500 scanner and watched the intake temp. The only difference between the cold air and short ram is the temp when you stop at the stop light. Then intake temps goes up quicker then the short ram but dont think it doesnt go up with the cold air either because the pipes heat up.
Now the temps while moving though are the wsame. Now I did notice the infamouse torque jump that you feel with the cold air, but I belive that may be more because of the extra pipe which should hol more air in it but that is just theory for me.

yeah yeah I know there IS a difference, but for my situation I can't justify spending any money on a CAI. I'm going to have to sell it eventually and probably not make back anywhere near the same amount. But yeah, there is a difference with all the piping etc. But for those people who are waiting or dont want to spend the money on an intake, Id suggest taking off all the plastic sound deadening crap. It sounds good and im sure it makes a slight difference.

I did the same.... Took out everything and clamped a filter on the MAF. The only bad thing is.... Rubber absorbs heat. So you are sucking a lot more hotter air then if you were to have a alum. short ram.

yeah sorry, I completely forgot about the exhaust resonator... hehe.. but if it was the exhaust resonator that was made out of plastic I'm sure wed have a lot of crispy mazdas. :)

yea, and by the way, without our exhaust reasonator..our cars sound like a god damn demon..really ricey and high pitched on the top of a gear, I just figured that out today. I'll post a sound clips so you can hear..

okay okay okay!!! I picked the wrong word to call it... Not the airbox that holds the filter.. but the crap connected to the airbox that sits over the radiator and shoots down the side of the radiator..

I guess we can call it the "Airbox Extension" or in otherwords.. worthless.

And Im sure our cars sound like s*** without the exhaust resonator haha..

wait..did what? take off the resonator? (exhaust) it doesnt help pick up at all..it just makes the car sound like a vtec'd track car

Twizyours: yeah I know. No mercy on this forum! :)

Mazda99Pr: Thanks for the backup I was kinda dying here. I think it makes the car sound meaner and not so "everyones passenger car."

EDIT: OH GOOD GOD!!! NOT THE EXHAUST RESONATOR!!!!!!! The intake... the intake... the intake .... the intake!!!! hahah this thread should be killed...
